The 16-year-old apparently hitched a ride from San Jose, California, to Maui in the landing-gear wheel well of a Boeing 767, Hawaiian Airlines said.

Woah! Kid is lucky he survived!

Having said that really? They are busy practically strip searching American Citizens and making us give up our toothpaste before boarding a plane and a kid just wandered onto the airport tarmac and hid in the wheel well?

Yesterday the SJ airport was denying that he got over the barb-wired fence. People being interviewed said a person could put their jacket over the top and just hop over, it wouldn't be that difficult.

The boy could face permanent brain damage from the experience, in fact, it's "more likely than not," Stahl said. He could face neurological issues, memory problems or a lower IQ.

When the ground crew at Kahului Airport noticed the boy, he was wandering the tarmac, dazed and confused.

The teen also could have frostbite or a kidney injury because when the body freezes, particles of muscle enter the blood stream and damage the kidneys, Stahl said.

San Jose airport officials say surveillance video shows a figure cross the tarmac and head towards the 767.

The slight teenager, first seen on a security camera video, did not appear again until later Sunday morning, when airline workers spotted him 2,350 miles to the west, walking on the tarmac at Kahului Airport on the island of Maui.

The boy told investigators he crawled into the wheel well of the plane and lost consciousness when the plane took off.

An hour after the plane landed at Kahului Airport, the boy regained consciousness and emerged to a "dumbfounded" ground crew, the FBI's Simon said.

The Maui airport has video of him crawling out of the left main gear area.

So are they going to send him back to the US or send him on to Africa?

The boy spent Tuesday "resting comfortably" in a Hawaii hospital, said Kayla Rosenfeld of the state's Department of Human Services.

Officials with child welfare services, which now has custody of the teen, are making arrangements to send him home, she said.

Santa Clara Unified School District spokeswoman Jennifer Dericco confirmed the teenager was a high school student in the district.

"We're working with them, and just making sure that he and his family and any of his peers have all the support that they need when he returns," she said.

A lot of good all of our security measures are doing for us !
Hard to believe this was possible ; but I'm glad the teen seems to be o.k.

As far as the cameras recording him climbing the fence at the airport... cameras do no good at all , if no one is watching them. Couldn't they install some sort of motion sensor/alarm for people who can access airport barriers ?

This story sounds so fishy to me. How could the kid possibly survive..let alone walk away unscathed. Today a story about giving him food and water after he was found. The photo of him on the gurney..his clothes look clean. Just seems the below zero temps, lack of oxygen, the very harsh cramped, probably dusty, greasy conditions of being inside a wheel well. Let alone the possibility of falling out if unconcious, or getting crushed by the huge wheels.

I wonder if he actually got in the cargo area and officials do not want to make that public. I cant believe a kid (or anyone for that matter)...able to climb a fence and walk around the planes for hours. It could just as easily been a terrorist planting bombs..

All the "security" set in place after 9/11, with the exception of keeping a sterile, locked, cockpit, is theater, plain and simple. Which is why this kid was able to get out there.

Patriot Act, TSA, Homeland security, useless, all of it. It's all theater to keep people on edge and cover up power grabs by the defense industry and war machine.

I really can't believe it. Wouldn't he get hypothermia? What about oxygen? It sounds impossible to me.

I did read the article and I see their reasoning. I just still don't believe it!!!

well, there have been reported cases where the stowaway survived, a recent one a couple of years ago made the news, sadly because the stowaway fell to his death when the landing gear hatch opened.

I was reading local comments on the first day and many thought he was in the cargo area. How did he figure out where it would be safe in the wheel well? Obviously though others have. I wonder if he'll make it to the talk shows.

The kid was aiming for a spot in this year's Darwin Awards.

My thoughts exactly. He wasn't even concerned about WHAT plane he got on! I am guessing the only time he was ever on a plane in his life was the trip to the U.S. so he assumed ALL airplanes would take him back to Somalia.

All of this talk about possible brain damage, would they even be able to tell?
