A Billerica mother, raised in Brookline, vanishes without a trace. Who knows what happened to her? And did police fail to do their job when the first call for help came in? I-Team reporter Joe Bergantino has the exclusive details on a cold case that should never have gone cold.

and

The following week Amy was out sick. By week’s end her husband emailed Amy’s boss a resignation letter. Amy never called in. Never picked up her paychecks.

Amy’s supervisor suspected the worst. So he called the Billerica Police Department and told a detective about Amy’s history of abuse and that he feared she had been murdered.

So what did the police do?

They made one telephone call to Robert Desmond who said Amy had decided to leave the area because of her encounter with the private eye.

The Billerica Police Detective believed him and did nothing else.

Joe Bergantino:
“Do you think as Chief, a phone call was all that should have been done?

Daniel Rosa, Billerica Police Chief:
“I don’t think I want to comment on that right now. We’re still in the investigation, involved in the investigation.”

Police never went to Amy’s home to interview her husband face-to-face. They never bothered to go to Lahey Clinic and interview Amy’s co-workers.

and

as far as we know, detectives still have not tried to obtain Robert Desmond’s phone or credit card records or his computer hard drive. They have not brought Desmond into a police station for questioning or tried to talk with his son alone. Which makes Amy Sher’s family skeptical about authorities assurances that they are doing everything they can to solve this case.

Details of Disappearance
Sher was last seen on October 18, 2002 at approximately 12:00 pm in the vicinity of Alwife Station in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

There have been rumors that Amy was the victim of domestic abuse at the hands of her husband, but those claims have not been substantiated. The husband had also reportedly made threats against Amy's family in the past, causing them to take out a restraining order against him. The husband had also caused an estrangement between Amy and her family.
At her workplace, supervisors documented several years of what they called significant and severe emotional and physical abuse. Amy never said who was responsible and rejected numerous offers of help.

In October 2002, a private detective tried to reunite Amy with her family. She refused. The following week, Amy was out sick. By week?s end, her husband emailed Amy?s boss a resignation letter. Amy never called in, and never picked up her paychecks. Police did not begin a investigation into Amy's disappearance until April 2004, eighteen months after her last known contact.

Family hopes billboards help solve cold case disappearance in Billerica

https://www.fox25boston.com/news/fa...old-case-disappearance-in-billerica/741629185

Two new billboards are set to be unveiled Tuesday with the hope of helping investigators learn what happened to a missing Billerica woman.

Amy Sher left her work in October 2002 and suddenly vanished. Her sister, Joani McCullough, said the family believes she is dead, and her husband Robert Desmond is to blame.

“It’s a cold case. It’s 16 years later. But we have no body, no crime scene no eyewitness,” McCullough said

The latest episode from The Vanished podcast is about Amy.

This was one of the most heartbreaking stories I've ever heard. I nearly cried when i listened to the letter her boss sent to the police after Amy disappeared. He said Amy was come to work visibly beaten and abused, one event she came to work dragging her leg behind her and clinging to the wall grimacing in pain. She told him that she had been thrown from a horse. Her leg appeared broken and she came to work a couple days later with crutches meant for a child.

Her coworkers tried their best to save Amy, they would always ask her if she needed help and would put battered women's posters in the bathroom and in everyone's office mail slot. One time they offered her $10,000 to take her son and go underground but she refused.

I just heard Amy's story while listening to old episodes of the Vanished podcast, and I'm absolutely sick to my stomach over it. Yet another case of a woman who was most likely murdered by her significant other and no one seems to want to do anything about it. I just don't understand it.

Details of Disappearance

Sher left her job in the finance department at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts early on October 14, 2002. She said she didn't feel well. For the next two days, she called in sick. At 10:00 a.m. on October 17, her husband, Robert Desmond, telephoned Sher's boss and said she would not be able to report to work again.

The day after that, Desmond contacted Sher's employer again, asking for her email address; he stated Sher wanted to send her boss an email but was "unable to do it herself." A few minutes later Sher's boss got an email from Desmond with an attached resignation letter from Sher. She never collected her last paychecks.

Sher's boss became concerned about the situation and contacted police, who spoke to Desmond. He said his wife had left him voluntarily and under "amicable" circumstances on October 18, four days after she was last seen at work. He said he dropped her off at the Alwife train station in Cambridge, Massachusetts at noon and never saw her again.

As there was no evidence that Desmond's story was untrue or that any harm had come to Sher, no further investigative action was taken at that time.

Sher was estranged from most of her family at the time of her disappearance. They stated she began to have differences with them when she began dating Desmond in the early 1990s. Desmond allegedly made threatening telephone calls to Sher's relatives, and they got a restraining order in 1994 which forbade him to contact them.

At the time of her disappearance, Sher was living with Desmond and their young son in Billerica, Massachusetts. Her family was unaware of her son's existence, as she had kept the child's birth a secret.

She was not reported missing for eighteen months; her estranged relatives told the police of her disappearance after they hired a private detective to find her and the detective discovered that Desmond and Sher's son were living together without her.

When investigators questioned Desmond again about his wife's disappearance, he repeated that she had left voluntarily and he assumed she was fine.

Authorities do not believe Sher disappeared of her own volition and are investigating her disappearance as a potential homicide.

Sher's family and co-workers stated that Desmond has a violent temper and severely abused her physically and emotionally, and she had to keep Desmond constantly informed of her whereabouts. She had been very close to her family before becoming involved with Desmond.

He has not been charged in connection with his wife's disappearance, however, and continues to maintain that she simply left him.

Sher's driver's license lapsed after her disappearance and has not been renewed. Her 1994 Pontiac has also not been re-registered. Sher is a graduate of Brookline High School and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor; she has a degree in engineering and hospital maintenance. Desmond is her second husband; she divorced the first in 1990 after a two-year marriage.

She was raised in a Jewish family, but Desmond is a Christian. Her loved ones do not believe she would have abandoned her son. Billerica police are investigating Sher's disappearance and foul play is suspected.
