Varela's wife told police he had been kidnapped before.
“Something similar to this has happened in the past. A ransom was paid and he was released,” said Salazar, who was unable to comment on the reason for the alleged abductions.
Strange. Not his first time being kidnapped for ransom.

Both of Varela's kidnappings have taken place in the last year
The first kidnapping was never reported; he was released after ransom was paid (left injured alongside a road)
Over a 12 hour period on April 7 Varela's wife received several ransom calls asking first for $100K and then $1mil
His wife told LE that Varela was being tortured in the background during at least one of the ransom calls
Varela was due in court 4/11 for a drug charge from a felony marijuana possession in November (up to 50lbs)
Police believe Varela is the victim of a homicide
Terrance McKinney, 24, has been charged with "aggravated kidnapping of a victim who has yet to be found"
McKinney was arrested after police tracked the cell phone used to make the ransom calls (DUH!)
