Lin family murders

The Lin family murders were the 2009 killings of North Epping, New South Wales, Australia news agent Min Lin; his wife Yun Lin; his sister-in-law Irene Lin; and their two sons, Henry (12) and Terry (9). The family were bludgeoned to death with a blunt instrument, which was never found. The faces of the victims were so disfigured that forensics had to be used to identify them.

Kathy Lin, sister of Min Lin, discovered the bodies when she went to the house at around 9:00 am to see why the news agency run by the Lin family was not open. She called the police and an ambulance, but the victims were beyond help.

Brenda Lin, 15, was the only member of the immediate family to survive. She was on a school trip in New Caledonia with her Cheltenham Girls classmates at the time of the murders. She learned of the murders via Facebook.

Lin family murder victims and their horrific deaths revealed in court

December 23, 2011

GRUESOME details of the Lin family murders - the crime that shocked Sydney -were revealed in court for the first time yesterday.

Crown documents tendered during Robert Xie's unsuccessful bail hearing in Central Local Court revealed DNA evidence which police said linked him to the killing of his five relatives, who were murdered as they slept in their North Epping home on July 18, 2009.

'Robert' Xie committed to stand trial over Lin family murders

December 19, 2012

THE man accused of murdering five members of his extended family, Robert Xie, has been committed to stand trial for the crime that shocked Sydney and became known simply as "the Lin family murders".

Magistrate John Andrews said there was a reasonable chance a reasonable jury would be satisfied he had committed the July 18, 2009 murders.

Lin family murder-accused denied bail
1 year ago December 24, 2012 3:22PM

ALLEGATIONS that accused Lin family murderer Robert Xie coached his wife and another family member were enough for a NSW Supreme Court justice to refuse him bail.

A covert surveillance operation of Xie produced conversations that suggested he may have told his wife Kathy Lin and a relative what to tell police following the five murders, a court heard in Sydney on Monday.

Xie, 48, sat in the dock without emotion when Justice Stephen Rothman overturned a local court decision from last week to grant him bail.

He said the taped conversations "suggests a significant degree of collusion in the evidence that is to be given, and a degree of coaching as to what could and should be said."

"Those conversations give me serious concern," Justice Rothman said as he read his draft judgment to the court.

Loyal wife keeps smiling - and provides alibi for night of murders

August 25, 2012

But after the first four days of Robert Xie's committal hearing this week, there can be little doubt that Ms Lin continues to support the man she married 13 years ago and to believe he should be freed.

The 41-year-old was called as a witness for the prosecution. But far from providing evidence of her husband's guilt, Ms Lin seemed convinced of his innocence.

The Crown prosecutor, Mark Tedeschi, QC, produced the transcript of an interview Ms Lin had with police in March 2010 in which she said she did not know whether her husband had got out of bed that night.

''On the 20th of July 2009 you claimed that [Mr Xie] was home all night,'' Mr Tedeschi said. ''In March 2010 you didn't know and on the 6th of May 2010 you didn't know. And now you claim that you know and that he didn't leave the house.

''Is it the case that your memory of what happened on the night of July 17 is better now than it was then?'' he said.

The interactions between Ms Lin and the Crown were adversarial for much of the two days she was in the witness stand.

From back on the day of Xie's arrest....

Min Lin's brother-in-law Robert Xie charged with murdering family of five in North Epping

May 05, 2011

POLICE have charged a family member with the high profile brutal killing of the Lin family in Epping in 2009.

Robert Xie, 47, the brother-in-law of Min Lin was arrested at his home in North Epping just after 9am.

Detectives with Strike Force Norburn took Xie to Parramatta Police Station and charged with five counts of murder

Robert Xie chose not to appear in Parramatta Local Court when the charges were mentioned. He did not make an application for bail and it was formally refused by the magistrate.

Homicide Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Peter Cotter said today: "This was a tragic incident and one of the largest single homicides in NSW history.

"The investigators have never given up, and today is testimony to their dedication, and the culmination of 2 years of intense investigation.''

Police this afternoon described Xie's arrest as a "very significant day'' for the Lin family and investigators, saying they now had ``sufficient evidence'' following a two year investigation that crossed international borders.

And one from when the bodies of the Lin family were discovered...

Five dead in murder home

July 18, 2009

FIVE members of a family were found killed in a home in Sydney's north-west yesterday. The bodies of Epping newsagent Min Lin, 46, his wife Lilly, 44, their sons Henry, 12, and Terry, nine, and a 40-year-old woman relative were found about 9.50am.

The only member of the immediate family left alive is the Lins' 15-year-old daughter, Brenda, who is visiting her grandparents in China

It is understood a relative made the gruesome discovery after walking into the home, in Boundary Rd, North Epping.

Five slain but no one heard a thing: Robert Xie on trial accused of Lin family murders

Senior Crown Prosecutor Mark Tedeschi QC has just started his opening address before a jury and packed public gallery, in a trial expected to last up to four months.

Xie, 50, has pleaded not guilty to five murder charges, with the Crown alleging he bashed newsagent Min ‘Norman’ Lin, his wife Yun Li ‘Lily’ Lin, Lily’s sister Yun Bin ‘Irene’ Lin and Min and Lily’s two sons, nine year old Terry and 12 year old Henry.

The strange thing is it was he who dropped the boys home that night after the whole family gathered at the grandparents house, I wonder what triggered this? Crown to discuss motive next ..

Oh and RL has arrived in court in full hair and make-up today, so strange.
