“We only had one missing person case, and (the skeletal remains) did not match,” Sheriff Douglas Mullendore said Friday. “There is not much to update. The autopsy has been performed, and we are waiting for the final results .... It could take months and even longer.”

The sheriff’s office said mushroom hunters found a human skeleton lying in the water at Marsh Run on Sunday. The discovery was made in the area of Loose Lane off Old Forge Road.

Mullendore said human tissue and pieces of clothing were found on parts of the skeleton. He said authorities were able to determine the remains were those of a male.

The location is just north of Antietam Creek and not far from the Pennsylvania state line.
 
Hagerstown is roughly 120 miles from LA Plata, MD, where Robert Lee Hourihan's car was found. Wishful thinking on my part, I'm sure, but I really wish he could be found.

The Washington County Sheriff's Office is releasing a description of human remains found in a wooded area near Hagerstown last month in hopes that someone can help identify the man.

The agency said Wednesday that investigators believe the decomposed remains are those of a white male in his early 50s, approximately 6 feet tall. The skull shows evidence of an old fracture on the left side of the face that was medically treated.

The body was dressed in red shorts, black undershorts, and a green- or blue-and-yellow striped, short-sleeve shirt.

Officials say an approximate weight was not able to be determined based on the condition of the body. The remains were in the elements between six and 15 months, officials report.

Six to fifteen months would be somewhere between approximately January to November 2013. Given the shorts, I would say summer of 2013 is most likely.
 
The combination of red shorts and a green/blue and yellow striped shirt seems a bit unusual for a 50 year old man. It could be a clue to his identity.

Deputies said there is a possibility of a scar present on his left temple, due to the aged injury which was present on the skull. The man would have received medical treatment in reference to this injury.

Investigators believe Marsh Run may have been the final resting place for the remains, but not where the remains were initially deposited. "Marsh Run comes out of Pennsylvania so there's a possibility that his body was put into the run or somehow come into the run up in Pennsylvania and washed its way down to Maryland," said DFC. Hose.

Mayer’s mother–and other sources–revealed to PIX 11 that Robert Mayer, an electrician with the Local 3 union, was struggling with prescription drug use. His mother said in the late 1990’s, he had fallen from a roof at Elmhurst Hospital, “landed on a pipe, broke every one of his ribs, and he was put on pain medication.”

An accident like that might have accounted for the head injury as well, but you'd think they would have mentioned the broken ribs. It also quotes his sister as saying he took his shotgun.

Which leaves me with the question of whether you can get to Marsh Run, either in MD or upstream, via railroad.
 
I live near DC and Hagerstown has always been known for having a huge drug problem, most notably prescriptions and heroin. It would be far for Robert Mayer to travel but he could have been taken and dumped there, or decided it was worth the drive to score a good deal. Stranger things have happened. But aside from Baltimore, if you want to score drugs in Maryland, Hagerstown would be on the top of the list.

I know of several cases where people drive several hours to buy drugs. So IMO it could certainly be him.

Has Robert Mayer been submitted? I don't know how to do it.
 
The description of his behavior and the fact his shotgun was missing makes me think suicide is a possibility as well. Some people do go pretty far outside their home territory to end it, so there's no danger of the family finding the body.
 
So to summarize (https://identifyus.org/en/cases/12738) an adult white male about six feet tall, with a prior skull injury, missing in 2013 or 2014. He's wearing clothing suitable for summer (shirt and shorts). Nothing about cause of death or how he might have wound up in the water.
 
Hi all... I'm new to this site (and web sleuthing, in general), and wanted to get some feedback on an idea I had about this case. I see strong similarities between this male and Eugene Campbell, a man who went missing from PA in 2005. The sketch of the unidentified decedent and the photos of Mr. Campbell are very similar - particularly the face shape, hairline, ears, eyes, philtrum, and brow bone. Also, the decedent was found less than 2 hours south of where the Mr. Campbell was last seen (albeit 9 years later). The age range matches, and the height is off by 1 inch. The other details don't appear to preclude a match. Here is a side-by-side comparison on the Reveal site. Does anyone have any thoughts about this? Thanks!

The NamUs UP casefiles describes the remains as "Partial Remains with Soft Tissues" and estimates the postmortem interval as "Months".

Since the John Doe was probably almost entirely skeletal, any resemblance of the hairline, ears, eyes, and philtrum are probably coincidental.

But nevertheless, I do agree that his overall facial shape and placement of his facial features are pretty consistent to the drawing.

And since there is no DNA or dentals on the MP, and since fingerprints aren't available on either the UP or MP, the two cases haven't been subjected to an automated comparison.
