Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkUp to 300 other workers are believed to be trapped underground at the mine in Soma, Manisa province.

Those trapped are about 2km (1.2 miles) below the surface and 4km from the mine's exit.

Search and rescue operations are taking place. It is estimated that 580 workers were underground at the time of the blast, but that many escaped.

Hundreds of miners trapped after explosion in Turkish coal mine

An explosion and fire in a coal mine in western Turkey killed at least 166 miners and trapped hundreds more on Tuesday, with the death toll expected to rise in the country’s worst mining accident for more than two decades.

Energy Minister Taner Yildiz said 787 workers had been in the mine in Soma, around 75 miles northeast of the Aegean coastal city of Izmir, when the blast occurred. Around 400 are still underground.

Carbon monoxide poisoning killed most of those confirmed dead, while another 76 were injured and taken to hospital, he told reporters at the scene of the disaster.

From the one link above, I did the math, not encouraging at all. My arms extend to all who lost loved ones. Hoping for the best though. I followed the Chilean mine survivors. May God be with them to rescue who they can. Mines are so final. My grandfather was a KY coal miner. Died in a crash of the mine long before modern even set in as far as mines go. Dangerous always & not reading favorable information about the conditions of mines in Turkey, at all. jmo

I do hope there are pockets or areas where the remaining can be rescued. That's what I hope for.

It's getting ugly in Turkey. Protests, fighting & families mourning their loved ones. 245 confirmed dead and 120 still missing per the news. The PM isn't getting any popular when one of his advisors is pictured kicking a loved one of one of the deceased while on the ground.

Clashes have erupted across Turkey as residents rally in anger at a mining accident which killed 274 people in the western Turkish town of Soma on Tuesday. Eight hundred marched on Ankara’s energy ministry as police fired tear gas and water cannon.

Violent protests have been reported in Soma itself, where relatives of the dead miners are unleashing their anger at Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
