Detroit — A local meat wholesaler is recalling 1.8 million pounds of ground beef distributed for restaurant use in four states that may be contaminated with the bacteria E. coli.

Detroit-based Wolverine Packing Co. is requesting a variety of its ground beef products produced between between March 31 and April 18 be returned, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service.

The possibly contaminated beef were shipped to distributors for restaurant use in Michigan, Ohio, Massachusetts and Missouri. The Food Safety and Inspection Service identified 11 cases in the four states since they were informed of the strain of E. coli on May 12...

1.8 million pounds of beef recalled for E. coli risk

The United States Food Safety and Inspection Service announced Monday that 1.8 million pounds of ground beef products are being recalled on fears that they may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

Recalled cases of beef from Wolverine Packing Company in Detroit, Michigan, were produced between March 31, 2014 and April 18, 2014 and shipped to distributors for restaurant use in Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri and Ohio. A complete list of products can be found on the FSIS website.

Based on investigations, 11 people across four states are suspected to have been sickened by the product. FSIS officials said in a press release that the agency is continuing to work with state and federal public health partners on this investigation and provide updated information as it becomes available...

Stores may have received tainted beef

(CNN) -- The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service on Wednesday named retailers in nine states that may have received tainted beef.

Two days earlier, the FSIS announced that 1.8 million pounds of ground beef products were being recalled on fears that they could be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.

The federal agency named five stores in nine states. They are as follows:

-- Gordon Food Service Marketplace stores in Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin;

-- Surf N Turf Market in Sebring, Florida;

-- Giorgio's Italian Delicatessen in Stuart, Florida;

-- M Sixty Six General Store in Orleans, Michigan;

Gordon Food Service: Recalled meat pulled from store shelves

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Gordon Food Service says it pulled from store shelves packages of ground beef recalled because it may be contaminated with a deadly strain of E. coli bacteria.

The beef was sold in packages labeled Fresh Premium Angus Beef Steakburger, and it was packaged as a 10-count, 4-pound package.

Customers who bought the product at GFS Marketplace stores will be given a refund. They are asked to bring in a receipt or the packaging. They should throw out the meat immediately, store officials said.

Gordon Food Service is one of five companies on the retail distribution list released in connection with the recall by Wolverine Packing Co., of Detroit...

E. Coli Beef Recall Sparked By Rare Bug, CDC Says

A big recall of nearly 2 million pounds of ground beef potentially tainted with dangerous E. coli bacteria has expanded again, even as federal health officials confirmed Thursday that they’re dealing with a pretty rare bug.

Retail meat distributors in at least 10 states, including, now, North Dakota, dished out hamburger produced by Wolverine Packing Co. of Detroit, Michigan, the U.S. Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service said in an updated notice Thursday.

On Monday, Wolverine officials announced a voluntary recall of about 1.8 million pounds of Angus Steak burgers and ground beef patties produced between March 31 and April 18 after they were linked to at least 11 E. coli O157:H7 illnesses in people in four states.

The illnesses, which occurred between April 22 and May 2, were detected after an unusual spike in a rare type of E. coli O157 genetic fingerprints found by PulseNet, the system used by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to track human illnesses...
