Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department deputies were called to the scene about 10:30 a.m. regarding a man not breathing. When they arrived, they found Herrera lying on the ground at the bottom of the embankment in the San Gabriel Riverbed, according to a department news release.

The Times reported that Herrera had a single gunshot wound to the upper body. He was reported dead at the scene at 10:44 a.m., according to coroner’s records.

On Saturday, Herrera's body was found near the Long Beach-Lakewood border, near a popular jogging and biking path that runs alongside the riverbed. The Long Beach Towne Center shopping area is on the other side of Carson Street.
Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous should call Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-8477.

Herrera's father, Phillip Herrera, said his son was a special needs student who attended a vocational school in Lakewood and had taken a different route home the day he was found dead.

"Duke was a little naive and too innocent and that's what probably led to his demise," the father said. "(Duke) wouldn't even kill a bug in the house."

Detectives were looking into the possibility that he was lured to the riverbed.

How sad. So he had been found previously but this ended up happening to him recently.

I have a 21 year old son who has a bit of intellectual disability and I worry and stress so much with him. He is a nice kid and friendly but a bit reserved, so at least he isn't that naive.

Here's an interview with Duke's sister Amanda that was done last fall.

Amanda Herrera ran the SoCal (Pala) Spartan Race in September in memory of her brother. The Pala race marked, to the day, the one year anniversary of her brother’s homicide. In the group West Coast Spartans she made a post telling of her second lap that day she dedicated to her brother.

Sept. 19th 2015 at around midnight her brother, Duke Herrera who was special needs, high functioning autism, spent the day as usual at SVS, Social Vocational Services. At the end of the day he decided to see a movie and never returned home. When the officials found him he had been murdered. No suspects. A year later and they have one possible suspect who is currently in jail.

Duke lived in Long Beach, California and the location of SVS is 530 E. Wardlow Rd. Long Beach, CA. The movie theater he was last seen at was the Regal Theater on Carson St. at the Long Beach Towne Center. Please listen to her story and maybe, just maybe there is something you can do to help.
