OCALA — Marion County Sheriff's Office detectives are in the preliminary stages of a possible homicide investigation where human remains -- presumably those of a 72-year-old man missing since 2000 -- have been found in the yard of an Ocala home.

While detectives have much work ahead of them -- such as unearthing the remains in one piece, getting a positive identification of the remains and determining a cause of death -- the bones that are being uncovered at 3070 SW 89th Place may be that of Jerry Chirstilaw, who has not been seen or heard from since 2000.

Two months ago, investigators received a tip that Jerry Chirstilaw died during a domestic dispute in 2000 and was buried in the backyard where he used to live.

Investigators searched the backyard with the help of a family member and found what they believe are remains.

"The K-9 unit alerted to a specific area in the ground and that's where we started digging," said Judge Cochran, Sheriff's Office spokesman.
