    AK - Sharon Buis, 48, Juneau, 23 May 2014

    My hometown....

Search underway for missing hiker -

Alaska State Troopers, SEADOGS, and Juneau Mountain Rescue will continue searching on Monday for a missing woman believed to be hiking in the vicinity of Mount Roberts. Buis was last seen Thursday or Friday, and her locked car found was at the Mount Roberts trailhead. She did not show up for a planned meeting with friends on Saturday morning.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

"When from a long distant past nothing persists, after the people are dead, after things are broken and scattered, still alone, more persistent, more faithful, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long, long time like souls, ready to remind us, waiting, hoping for their moment amid the ruins of all the rest, and bear unfaltering in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence the vast structure of recollection."

More than likely she is hurt. Either by an animal such as a bear, or she may have fallen in some way and hurt herself. Lost? Doubtful. With the way that Juneau is set up, for lack of better words, all she would have to do is look behind her, so to speak. The Gastineau Channel is a major land marker so to speak, in knowing where you're at in Juneau. It's possible that she traveled a great distance on Mt. Roberts, but there aren't very many trees up towards the summit. I've been on that mountain many times. I'm certain that she's hurt in some way outside of her wanting to stay up there for one reason or another. I hope she's found soon. Snow generally stays on the mountains year round and avalanches are a concern in May.

Authorities search for missing Juneau woman -

Sharon Buis of Juenau was supposed to go for a hike on the Mount Roberts trail, but never caught up with her companion, said Alaska State Trooper spokesman Tim DeSpain. The planned destination was Hawthorne Peak. The search area involves “rugged mountainous terrain with deteriorating snow conditions at higher elevations and thick vegetation at lower elevations.” Buis is believed to have hiking experience.

A U.S. Coast Guard H-60 helicopter is conducting another aerial search of the Mt. Roberts and Mt. Juneau areas looking for 48-year-old missing hiker Sharon Buis.

A Juneau Mountain Rescue member is onboard directing the search and thermal imaging devices are being used. This is the Coast Guard’s second scan, and the fourth helicopter search overall since Sunday.

“No new information prompted this, it’s just double checking areas, and checking and double checking,” says Alaska State Trooper Sgt. Timothy Birt.

Alaska State Troopers say Southeast Alaska Dogs Organized for Ground Search, or SEADOGS, have detected the scent of Sharon Buis on the Mt. Roberts trail, where teams have been searching.

Her scent was first detected on the trail above Mt. Roberts Tram Sunday. Tuesday morning, a different search and rescue dog detected her scent closer to the Mt. Roberts trailhead near the parking lot on Basin Road. Buis’s black Honda Civic was located there Saturday morning by a friend.

Trooper Sgt. Timothy Birt says these are good leads and confirms the search team is on the right track, but a lot more information is still needed.

Renee Holmes spent the first two days “crying at the drop of a hat” after learning her friend Sharon Buis was missing. Tears turned to anger during the next two days, as Holmes asked herself over and over, “Why did she take off without telling anyone?”

    <snip>

Frustration levels are growing by the day for those who know Buis, an experienced hiker who was reported missing when her car was located at the Mount Roberts trailhead on Saturday night. Searchers are frustrated, too.

“There’s been a lot of effort that’s gone into it, and there’s been no new leads,” Alaska State Trooper Sgt. Tim Birt said, adding, “We’re all emotionally involved in it.”

Alaska State Troopers say an extensive search for a missing Juneau hiker has been called off.

Troopers announced the search suspension Thursday, saying a missing persons case will remain open on 48-year-old Sharon Buis.

Luke Holton doesn’t know 48-year-old Sharon Buis, but he’s helping to organize the volunteer search effort that started Wednesday, less than one week after Alaska State Troopers called off the official search...

One of Buis’s hiking friends said Buis owned a yellow backpack. It’s an unofficial lead, Holton says, but it’s something to look for. He hopes the volunteers can find anything that will restart the official search.

“The best option we would have is to find some of her personal property up here or anything else,” Holton says. “The further we go in, the less tracks you’re going to find in the snow, so once we get past Icy Gulch and you find tracks on the gulch or tracks on the peak of Gastineau, that could potentially also be enough evidence.”
