Malaysia - Gareth Huntley, 34, Tioman Island, 27 May 2014

Gareth Huntley, 34, from London, has been missing in a Malaysian jungle since Tuesday May 27th, after going on a trek to a waterfall on Tioman Island. It's off Malaysia's south eastern coast. He was in Malaysia as a volunteer for the Jura Turtle project.

Gareth's parents have flown out to Malaysia and are desperately appealing for more help

The only searches of the large jungle area appear to be carried out by volunteers now, his mother says.

ETA: There is a FB page for Gareth, 12 hours ago someone was posting Tioman police and SAR are continuing the search.

Another pic of Gareth. From twitter, it seems things are taking off, but time is running out.

Gareth is said to be fit and healthy and an outdoors' type though, so there's hope. The Malaysian jungle's easy to just get lost in, I think.....

It's the Lubuk Teja Waterfall Gareth was heading for.

'The police are trying their best in the search for a British man who went missing in Pulau Tioman on Tuesday, but can only do so much before calling off the search, said Rompin OCPD Deputy Supt Johari Jahaya.'

    http://www.thestar.com.my/News/Natio...David-Huntley/

ETA: That article mentions the K9s, but Gareth's friend on Tioma says they never actually arrived.....

Gareth's an accountant, but doesn't want that to define him.

I hope they find this guy.

There is an English soldier who survived in the Malaysian jungle for years during the war, and wrote a book about it. It's amazing and I'll post the name when I remember. I Hope Gareth's read it.

Gareth had relocated and was living in Malaysia, not just taking a volunteering vacation.

That's good news - he'll have strong links and support in the community, and there will be support for his parents too. This is going to be such a tough time for them, landing in a foreign country and trying to find their son in a jungle somewhere.

A team of about 20 people and a K9 have arrived on Tioma to search today, although it's half past 7pm in Malaysia now, so it'll be pitch black I'd think and searches will have had to stop now?

Gareth's mother Janet Southwell says in the article the police effort to find Gareth was 'a little slow'. His brother Mark Huntley said for days it had only been locals and friends searching.

Mark was having a lovely time, and was due to start a new job in Singapore next week. He was prepared with the right footwear, water and a phone.....but there's no signal in the area.

The waterfall's 3.7 miles from the Turtle project, with several routes to it.

Friend Sophie Wilson said, 'Nothing has come from the authorities. As far as we are aware the police we informed and haven't been doing anything. They have been incredible lethargic.'

Gareth has got a fantastic advocate on his behalf in Sophie.

A 'map'. It's a nightmare of a search area. There's nothing in the interior but jungle, it looks like.

I'm guessing the turtle project base is that coastal settlement on the left of the island?
