Law enforcement sources said the male body had been wrapped in a tarp and found behind some Jersey barriers at the Town Neck Beach parking lot, just a short distance from the town's popular boardwalk.

Bret Cerulli, 27, who lives less than 2 miles away from the scene and frequents Town Neck Beach, said he was in the area when the body was discovered by a friend on a sand dune.

His friend called the police, and then Cerulli and his friend watched as the police unwrapped the coverings.

At first, he and his friend thought it may have been a dog or tuna, but when investigators unzipped a duffel bag, which he said was wrapped in several industrial garbage bags and a heavy gray tarp, it became clear by their reactions that it was something more.

"They all jumped back a little bit," Cerulli said. "The first police officer was able to tell me that it was in fact a back that came out. It was human."

Cerulli said he saw the authorities cover the body with a white sheet, which quickly became drenched in blood.

The body found wrapped in a tarp at a Cape Cod beach was missing its head, arms, and legs, and was affixed to a moving dolly, authorities said this afternoon.

Authorities believe the body was that of a black male, 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet tall, weighing 220 to 230 pounds, said Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe. The body also had an old surgical scar in the abdomen area on the right side of the torso...

He said that, based on the condition of the body, the slaying was “a fairly recent event.”

Rhode Island State Police were called in to assist with the investigation because of the possible tie to Rhode Island. Police spoke with every employee of Windustrial, who said they make and give out thousands of those t-shirts. The shirt on the victim is believed to be 6-8 years old.

Police said the incident doesn’t indicate any threat to the public, but have increased patrols to the area as a precaution. They believe the body was dumped there, possibly out of a car.

The remains have been identified as belonging to an African American male, 70-72 inches in height, and weighing 220-230 pounds. The body had a 3-4 inch surgical scar on the right side of the abdonimal area.

Officials released photos of two items found at the scene: a dark blue t-shirt from ‘Cranston Windustrial,’ an industrial parts distributor in Rhode Island, and a blue dolley. Police are requesting information from anyone who might recognize either item.

O’Keefe said officials do not believe this case is linked to the death of Dennis Ray Jackson, who was killed and his body dismembered last fall. Parts of Jackson’s body were found burning in November in a barrel near the Bridgewater Correctional Complex and behind an industrial building in Boston’s Hyde Park section.

“We don’t feel they’re linked because of some particular facts of our case,” he said.

Sandwich police said they have found no evidence of any danger to people living on Town Neck Road or visiting the beach, but extra patrols have been added.

The discovery alarmed residents, nonetheless.

Pralay Som, a Needham resident who has a summer home on Town Neck Road, said he and some friends went to the boardwalk late Monday afternoon where they saw families out enjoying the beautiful, summerlike weather. After driving back to Needham, Som said he learned that the body had been found Wednesday night.

“We consider that place to be such a nice place, safe place,” Som said in a phone interview. “To hear such gruesome news in that area is hard to take.”

Sharon Kalweit, 68, said she worried the news was keeping her young granddaughters awake at night.

“I know they have nightmares about it,” Kalweit said. “I just hope their parents keep them away from the TV tonight.”

Michael Machonis, whose family has owned a home on Town Neck Road for 60 years, said that he has never heard of anything like that occurring in Sandwich.

“This is a retiree neighborhood,” the 63-year-old man said. “No drug houses, no crackhouses, I mean everyone has fun here.”

Tips are pouring in about the possible identity of a man whose torso was found on a Sandwich beach, Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe said Saturday.

A photo of the slain man's T-shirt has raised particular interest, O'Keefe said...

According to a statement from state police, the man was in good health, but was not "overly muscular." The body has a 3 to 4 inch scar on the right side of the abdomen, which is possibly a result of a hernia surgery, the statement said.

Body found in Sandwich missing head, limbs

The body found at Town Neck Beach on Wednesday night was missing the head and all four limbs, Cape and Islands District Attorney Michael O'Keefe said Friday.

The victim is believed to be a black male, about 6 feet tall and 220 to 230 pounds, O'Keefe said at an afternoon press conference at Barnstable Superior Court. He is looking for the public's help in identifying the man.

"The usual methods of identification are compromised," O'Keefe said. The torso had a 3- to 4-inch surgical scar unrelated to the grisly murder, he said.

Investigators believe the killing happened fairly recently because of the condition of the body, O'Keefe said, although he declined to put a specific time frame on it.

"We are seeking information from the public regarding this discovery," O'Keefe said. "Anyone who recognizes that T-shirt and may have seen someone who may fit the general description wearing it anywhere in the New England area, we urge you to call police at 508-790-5799."

Since the initial media blitz, there has not been a single update on this case. I'm curious as to whether LE is playing their cards close to the vest because they have a potential suspect or possible ID, or if they really don't know anything more than what they did when the victim's body was discovered a month ago.

It's kind of both, apparently. A friend who lives on the Cape tells me LE's been canvassing in the areas near where the body was found and checking out tow truck records and all the basic legwork like that, but it doesn't sound like they've been able to uncover anything useful.

It's a very busy area in the summer -- and quite likely they've had hundreds of tips about cars and people who might have been in the area :p Hopefully good police work and/or good luck will eventually turn up a connection.
