Vernon "Cody" Matthews is a UC Berkeley student who is apparently staying at his family's cabin in the Pollock Pines area for the summer. According to the article below, his parents say he called them when he arrived to say that the cabin had been ransacked when he got there earlier in the week.

Cody is thought to have gone out on a hike near Ice House Road in the Pollock Pines area on Friday, but hasn't been heard from since.

Search and rescue have been looking for him throughout the day, and according to the article, there has been a ping on his cell phone.

Hoping that Cody is ok and that they find him soon!

Almos said three witnesses saw Cody walking past cabins and hiking near Ice House Road. Rescue teams have been searching the surrounding area since Sunday morning. The only clue they’ve uncovered, a ping from Cody's cellphone.

“It’s down in the river just below the area of the Pacific Ranger Station along highway 50,” said Almos.

“He is young and bold and unafraid, and I’m concerned he took on something that was too big for him,” said Vern.

Here's an update from the County Sheriff's Office.

Cody had been dropped off at the family cabin in the Ice House area on Wednesday, June 4, 2014. His mother spoke with him via telephone on Friday, June 6, 2014 just before he went for a hike

Cody was staying at the cabin by himself. He has no vehicle and his personal belongings are still at the cabin.

There are no indications of foul play, however Cody’s cell phone has not been used since Friday, June 6, 2014

It's worrying that the cabin had been ransacked & then Cody goes missing!

Still searching...

Matthews, who grew up calling the water and the woods his second home, is muscular and athletic, his friends and family said. He goes by the nickname Thor because of his long blonde hair and 6-foot-3 frame.

“He fancied himself a cross between Indiana Jones and Thor,” Vern Matthews said, mentioning a Canadian dig site where the the two found a 50-million-year-old dinosaur thigh bone...

Vern Matthews described his son as “kind of the absent-minded professor,” adding that his intelligence often outweighed his common sense.

Not sure if there's much new news here, but here's another story:

It says his personal belongings remain at the cabin but they didn't specify if that includes cell phone. I could see going out for a quick hike without much... the weather's been warm, hot if anything, but definitely not cold. With some water and a granola bar or something he'd be fine if he planned to return even within a few hours. I hope he's okay.

“It’s a tough one,” said Lt. Tim Becker with the El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office. “We really don’t know what happened. We just need to keep searching all possible areas.”

Searchers will try to cover more ground on Tuesday in an effort to find Matthews.

“There are tracks, but they don’t know for sure whose tracks they are,” said Becker. “We don’t know what he was wearing or what type of shoes he may have had on. We’ve had all kinds of reports, even that he might have seen barefoot on roadway.”

What's interesting in this newscast is that his parents say that he had dinner waiting for him that was untouched at the cabin. I had read in another article his girlfriend saying the same thing, that there was even a fork out with the dinner. You would think that this means he planned to come back soon after his walk.

So glad they have divers on the scene now. That last ping on his cell phone is strange (although I'm not a cell phone ping expert by any means).

How scary , I hope they find this young man alive .

Definitely seems like he planned on being back soon, with dinner on the table. I hope he didn't have an accident & was too badly injured to seek help. Did he have a cell phone with him?
