Daphne was a student at the University of New Orleans who had just moved from the dorms to an apartment after discovering that she was pregnant. She worked part-time at Brennan’s Restaurant and was supposed to work a 3 p.m. shift the day she went missing but never arrived for work.

Just six days after her disappearance, Daphne, who was two months pregnant, was scheduled to quit her job, leave school, and return home to Maryland to live with her mother while she prepared to welcome her new child. The plane ticket had already been purchased. Daphne’s family says she told them she was being pressured to end the pregnancy.

“She refused to have an abortion. She told her mother (my sister), and her mother told Daphne to come home so that she could take care of her,” Jones’ aunt Helena Smith told NewsOne in an interview. Jones’ grandmother dropped her off at her apartment and [that] was the last family member to see her alive.

Daphne is described as a black female with a light complexion, 5'5" tall and 130 pounds, with brown eyes and short black or reddish-brown hair, and a tattoo of an Oriental symbol on her right shoulder.

The picture in the original post is not Daphne. That's a whole different person. This is Daphne. Bumping for 17 years. Poor woman, I bet the boyfriend or any potential fathers of her unborn child did this.

I know this post is 18 years old but as a person who cared about Daphne I hope there are others out there still looking for her. Neither the picture in this post nor the one in the link is the Daphne jones in the story. The boyfriend from back home that she had just gotten back together with was in another state. That is always the first person they look at anyway. Daphne is a loving and trusting individual. Part of me wonders if it may have been a jilted lover that was not happy she was getting back with her boyfriend. Daphne is a beautiful, intelligent (at UNO on a jazz scholarship, spoke several languages) wonderful woman. I’ll never stop hoping to see my friend again one day. CL

Details of Disappearance

Jones called her grandmother on January 3, 1999 and told her she would tell her boyfriend she was moving out. She was supposed to report for her 3:00 p.m. shift at Brennan's, where she was a hostess, but apparently did not do so since her cousin got a phone call from her at the time she was supposed to be at work. She was upset during the conversation with her cousin.

The next afternoon, Jones's apartment was found empty. All the lights were turned off, but the heater, television and iron were turned on, and there was food lying out. It appeared Jones had left home in a hurry. She has never been heard from again.

Jones was a student at the University of New Orleans in 1999. She had been living in the school's dormitories, but had moved into an apartment after learning of her pregnancy. She told her family that her unborn child's father was pressuring her to get an abortion.

Jones vanished shortly before she was supposed to move back to Washington, D.C., where she had graduated high school, to live with her mother. She had already bought her plane ticket and was due to fly out January 9.

Jones's parents and grandmother have died in the years since her disappearance. Her family believes she was murdered. Her case remains unsolved.

Circumstances of Disappearance

Daphne disappeared from her Lakefront area apartment just days before she was scheduled to move to the Washington, D.C., area. Her grandmother, Ethel Clark, had dropped her off at her New Orleans apartment in the 5500 block of St. Anthony Street at 14:30. Daphne was scheduled to work a 15:00 shift at Brennans Restaurant as a hostess, but she never made it. Her cousin spoke with her on the telephone that afternoon when she was supposed to be at work, and Daphne was upset

Daphne previously lived in Columbia, MO. She went to Edward Hynes Elementary and Fannie C. Williams Middle schools in New Orleans, and had gone to high school in Washington. She attended her first year of college at the University of Maryland. And both her siblings lived in the Washington area at the time,

but she had been in New Orleans since January 1995. During that time, she explored her love of languages, including Spanish and Vietnamese, Japanese and French. She talked about one day working overseas.

A student at the University of New Orleans, Daphne had recently moved from the dorms into an apartment after learning she was pregnant. She had a plane ticket and planned to leave for Maryland in six days, to live with her mother. She hadn't planned the pregnancy. She had been hoping to finish college, travel abroad and use her foreign language skills to work in international relations or teaching.

Daphne was planning to leave her job at Brennan's Restaurant and drop her classes at the University of New Orleans. She would fly home at the end of the week. She would keep the child, even though her boyfriend didn't want it.

When family searched her apartment the heater, television and iron were on. Her backpack with her identification was found at her house.

Foul play is suspected.
