SD: Search to continue for missing Colorado woman

We had a hellacious beginning of the week here at the Montana/Wyoming/South Dakota border, with numerous tornadoes, hail, rain and flash flooding.

2 women, Roxanne Bleibaum, 57, and 24-year-old Kristen Lakin were swept away in their SUV. Roxanne was located battered and bruised but still alive. Kristen is still missing.

Authorities in western South Dakota are searching for one of two Colorado women who were in a car caught in flood waters Tuesday night.

Roxanne Bleibaum, 57, was found in relatively good shape but very fatigued, according to her daughter and the Butte County Sheriff, Fred Lamphere. Bleibaum walked the one to two miles in a streambed to an old barn; then followed a trail to Highway 85. A county maintenance worker, who was putting up barricades, discovered her and drove her to the sheriff's location.

I really do wish they would put a chopper in the air. This is a rural area and Kristen could be laying in a field.

Rescue Workers Still Searching For Missing Woman In Butte County

The search continues near the Battle Creek in Butte County for 24 year old Kristen Lakin.

    Search continues for missing woman

About 35 searchers were combing the area east of Battle Creek north of Belle Fourche Thursday morning in hopes of finding a second woman washed away by flood waters along U.S. Highway 85 north of Belle Fourche just before 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"We're all still optimistic," said Butte County Sheriff Fred Lamphere. "We're checking every debris pile. We still have a strong chance of rescuing a survivor."

About 35 searchers continued to search Thursday for a second woman washed away by flood waters along U.S. Highway 85 north of Belle Fourche on Tuesday night.

"We're all still optimistic," said Butte County Sheriff Fred Lamphere. "We're checking every debris pile. We still have a strong chance of rescuing a survivor."

He said the search is difficult because 24-year-old Kristen Lakin was reportedly wearing a black t-shirt and jeans when she and a friend, Roxanne Bleibaum of Colorado Springs, Colo., were swept away from their water-filled vehicle.

I'm seeing it reported as missing in SD not MT. I couldn't find the state mentioned when I made the post and took my best guess. My apologies. I thought they'd have found her by now.

Yeah, that's one of my pet peeves on local news sites. So often there's absolutely no indication what state they're located in, so I have to look at ads on the page to see if there are any local businesses with full addresses given, or a phone number so I can google the area code.

Welcome to South Dakota. LOL Those of us who live here are well aware of local news foibles. When you are instate you understand East River vs. West River.

Kristen has not been found. On Saturday morning, about 6am, we heard a lot of sirens and could see LE on the Interstate and then onto 85, the highway the ladies were on when they were swept away. we expected to hear she had been found but that was not the case. By now it is a recovery not a rescue attempt.

It is confusing for those who don't live here. 2 wrong turns in 15 minutes and you've gone from South Dakota to Wyoming to Montana or the opposite.

    Kristen has not been found.

Deputy Tristan Clements with the Butte County Sheriff's Office says resources are limited so now they will have to rely on landowners to keep an eye out for clues in the disappearance of 24-year-old Kristen Lakin.

The water has greatly receded from last week's storm, but not enough for South Dakota Highway Patrol's helicopter search team to locate a woman who was washed away during the torrential rain.

This is terrible. How far could she have gone? Are private citizens not able to search, because if that was my friend or family, I'd be there digging!
