Search on for woman missing in rugged terrain near Mt. Rainier

MOUNT RAINIER NATIONAL PARK, Wash. -
Search crews are looking for a woman who disappeared Wednesday while hiking in the rugged Owyhigh Lakes area of Mount Rainier National Park. The woman, identified as Karen Sykes of Seattle, was hiking with a companion when they reached snow at about 4,500 to 5,000 feet in elevation. Sykes continued on while her companion stayed behind.
When Sykes did not return, her companion alerted authorities that she was overdue at about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, and a search was initiated the next day.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

"When from a long distant past nothing persists, after the people are dead, after things are broken and scattered, still alone, more persistent, more faithful, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long, long time like souls, ready to remind us, waiting, hoping for their moment amid the ruins of all the rest, and bear unfaltering in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence the vast structure of recollection."

Crews searched Mount Rainier National Park on Friday for a prominent hiker and outdoors writer who was reported missing late Wednesday while she researched a story.

Karen Sykes, a knowledgeable hiker from Seattle, had adequate survival gear to camp overnight in an emergency, park spokeswoman Patti Wold said.
Im worried she may have been injured.

Just FYI, this Seattle Times article puts her age at 70.

She's said to be very fit and active, who "often goes on 13-mile runs."

Search on for Experienced Outdoors Writer, 70, Who Vanished on Mount Rainier

Search teams Friday were scouring the area around a steep, slippery trail on Mount Rainier for an experienced, 70-year-old hiker who disappeared Wednesday, park officials said.

Karen Sykes, a writer who penned the “Hike of the Week” column for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer for years, left a hiking companion on part of the Owyhigh Lakes trail Wednesday afternoon and never returned, Mount Rainier National Park public information officer Mimi Gorman told NBC News...

'Don Geyer, a friend of Sykes’, said she and her partner Bob Morthorst planned a day hike on Wednesday up the Owyhigh Lakes Trail for a piece she was writing. At around 5,000 feet in elevation, he said Morthorst took a lunch break while Sykes continued on, saying that she would be back in an hour; she would meet him on the way down.'

Search ongoing for outdoors writer on Mount Rainier

Friends of prominent outdoors writer Karen Sykes are anxious but hopeful that searchers will find her safely sheltered somewhere in Mount Rainier National Park.

Search teams have had no luck so far, but park officials were resuming efforts Saturday morning.

A crew in a helicopter and about 30 people on the ground searched steep, rugged terrain in the Owyhigh Lakes area for a second day Friday. They are focused along the length of the 8-mile Owyhigh Lakes Trail.

The three-day search for a well-known outdoors writer who went missing while hiking on Mount Rainier took a grim turn Saturday, when a body was discovered in rough terrain off the trail where she was last seen.

The body has not been officially identified to be that of Karen Sykes, 70, an author who penned the “Hike of the Week” column for the former Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

Female body found on Mt. Rainier, search for missing writer halted

The body was recovered about 3pm on Saturday but its identification was not confirmed immediately. Talking to reporters, Mount Rainier National Park spokeswoman Patti Wold said that the search team had found the body off the trail near Boundary Creek in rough, steep terrain.

She added that this area is not accessible easily and many hikers prefer not to travel here.

The spokeswoman said that the cause of death was not yet known, adding that the person?s identity will be confirmed by medical examiner.

A friend of well-known outdoors writer Karen Sykes said Sunday he has received a call from the National Park Service confirming that the body found yesterday on the east side of Mount Rainier is Sykes.

Michael Fagin said he believes he is one of a handful of people who received the call. Fagin was on a list of people who were to be notified of her death.

Official confirmation of the identity of the body found in the area where Sykes had been hiking isn’t expected until tomorrow.

SEATTLE (AP) - Friends on Sunday mourned a well-known outdoors writer and photographer who had been missing for three days in Mount Rainier National Park before searchers said they recovered a body of a woman.

The National Park Service said it will be up to the Pierce County medical examiner to confirm that the body found Saturday afternoon was that of 70-year-old Karen Sykes of Seattle. It was discovered in an area where searchers were looking for Sykes, and they ended the three-day rescue effort after finding it.

"For a lot of local hikers, it's an extreme loss," said Greg Johnston, who edited a "Trail of the Week" column she wrote for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. "For decades, she showed us the way, and now that's gone."
