Unclaimed cremated remains laid to rest at Northville cemetery

Northville— The cremated remains of Nettie Rutledge — along with those of 56 others that have gone unclaimed for years at a local funeral home — finally were laid to rest Friday.

The remains of the 57 people were interred during a special ceremony at the Rural Hill Cemetery in Northville. Among the group are a couple of infants and seven veterans of the U.S. armed services, including Norval Marlett, who served in the Spanish-American War in 1898.

“We realized we had to do something ... and we decided to have a ceremony of remembrance,” said David Griffin, owner of the L.J. Griffin Funeral Home Inc. “It’s our honor ... to do this service for those who have been forgotten.”

The funeral home inherited the unclaimed remains when it bought the Northrop-Sassaman Chapel this year...

A public memorial service is planned for 200 people whose bodies have gone unclaimed at the Wayne County medical examiner's office.

A coalition consisting of The Jewish Fund, the Archdiocese of Detroit and area funeral homes has come together to ensure the bodies are buried in individual graves at local cemeteries.

The interfaith service is to be held Wednesday at Our Lady of Hope Cemetery in Brownstown Township. One of the previously unclaimed bodies will be buried afterward...

HOLLY TOWNSHIP, Mich. -
The remains of 13 veterans that went unclaimed in a Detroit morgue are to be buried with full military honors in a Veterans Administration national cemetery.

State troopers are to accompany a 13-hearse procession that is scheduled to leave the Wayne County medical's examiner's office Thursday morning.

The burials are to get underway about two hours later at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly Township, 60 miles northeast of Detroit...
