AMBER Alert issued for missing five-year-old from Calgary

Calgary police are investigating the disappearance of a five-year-old child and his grandparents from a home in the southwest and issued an AMBER Alert on Monday afternoon.

Police were called to a home in the 100 block of 38A Avenue SW at about 10:00 a.m. Monday by a mother who went to the home to pick up her son who was staying with his grandparents.

The three were not at the residence and have not been located despite efforts by police.

Investigators say evidence at the scene suggests their disappearance may be suspicious.

There are no custody issues with the family - the boy’s parents are married and he is their biological son - and police have no history with the family, who are being co-operative, he added.

The grandparents’ vehicles are accounted for, as are those of the family, which initially had police ruling out sending out an Amber Alert. But Brookwell said police and Alberta government officials then changed their minds.

Alvin and Kathryn Liknes and their grandson Nathan O’Brien have not been seen since 10 p.m. Sunday.

The boy’s mother arrived at a property in the 100 block of 38A Avenue S.W. about 10 a.m. Monday to pick up her son — he had been staying at the address with his grandparents Sunday night — but found no one at home.

Calgary police spokesman Kevin Brookwell said the Liknes’ property was not found in its normal condition, leading investigators to believe the trio did not leave the home voluntarily.

Police say the mother of Nathan O’Brien dropped him off at her parents' home at 10 p.m. Sunday night for a sleepover.

"She comes back at 10 this morning, notably sees that the house is not normally as it is and there's other things within the house that would lead us to believe that they did not leave on their own volition," said Calgary police spokesman Kevin Brookwell.

He said he couldn't give any details about what those things were and said the grandparents, 66-year-old Alvin Cecil Liknes and Kathryn Faye Liknes, 53, are not suspects.

How scary for that family. Going to grandmas for a sleepover is supposed to be great fun not a tragedy. I pray that he did not witness anything horrible and that they are all found unharmed.

Police cordoned a wide area of the inner-city community Monday, taping off streets from foot and vehicle traffic for a couple of blocks in every direction from the home.

Officers walked the streets within the perimeter as the HAWCS helicopter circled overhead.

Those on the ground checked trash bins and spaces between homes in their search for clues.

A police forensics unit truck was parked outside the home.

Police also called the medical examiner early in the evening — though details as to the medical examiner’s involvement in the investigation was not divulged, police did say that it was not due to the discovery of a body or bodies

How horrible and frightening. Please please please be found safe like Erin Gray and her two kids were this weekend. Is an estate sale held when someone is moving? Was the house for sale as well? There must have been a few undesirables traipsing through the house that weekend. What a nightmare.

Preliminary snippets ..

Nathan's sleepover was a relatively short time from 10:00 pm to 10:00 am. IF the Estate Sale was involved in anyway, Nathan would not have been there during the sale, so would not appear to be a target. Estate sale makes me wonder if there might be a disgruntled person involved.

KL's social media indicates she is a former realtor who now owns her own business which seems reasonably successful. She is from Calgary and lives in Calgary.

AL's FB doesn't indicate his employment, but says he is from Calgary and lives in Edmonton?
