VICTORIANS have been put on high alert after a child rapist was able to walk out of the “Village of the Damned” — the Ararat home to some of our worst sex offenders.

Andrew Darling, who raped a 13-year-old girl, had several hours’ headstart before the public was warned as Victoria Police were forced to battle through red tape.

Darling, 42, triggered an alarm after cutting off his electronic tracking bracelet shortly after 2.30am yesterday. Despite bringing in the dog squad, police were unable to find him.

Victoria’s Corrections Commissioner Jan Shuard said staff got the alert about the tracking device being removed “immediately”.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Leonie Johnson said despite officers searching the surrounding area, Darling has not yet been found.
Darling was released on parole from Port Phillip Prison on May 20, 2009, after serving a nine-year sentence for the rape of a 13-year-old girl.

He was arrested in Queensland in 2009 after leaving Victoria while on parole.

July 7, 2014: Sex offender Andrew Darling escapes low-security Victorian prison after removing GPS device

A sex offender is still on the run in Victoria after he cut off his GPS-tracking bracelet and walked out of Corella Place correctional facility at Ararat in the state's north-west.
Corella Place is a residential facility next door to the Ararat prison, the Hopkins Correctional Centre.

It is about two kilometres from the town centre.

Take a long look at the critter in that picture.

Then imagine you're 13 and it's raping you.

:\

This guy was under close supervision, electronically tagged and in a supervision facility after his 'release' for a reason -- I hope he's apprehended before he hurts anyone else.

IMO if a sex offender is deemed too dangerous to be simply released - he should damned well stay in prison. A proper prison...

JULY 07, 2014: Fugitive child rapist Andrew Darling has bush survival skills, say police

POLICE say a child rapist who fled Ararat’s “Village of the Damned” has bush survival skills and could endure a long time on the run, sleeping rough.

Andrew Darling, who raped a 13-year-old girl in a bungled home burglary, left the Corella Place centre, which houses some of the state’s worst sex offenders, in the early hours of Sunday morning after cutting off electronic tracking bracelets fitted to both ankles.

As the police search for Darling, 42, took to the skies, Sergeant Peter Hawkins urged local landowners to keep an eye out around sheds and outhouses.

“He’s got a significant amount of bush knowledge and skills, and he does own a lot of camouflage clothes,” Sgt Hawkins said.

“He could potentially live out in the bush for some time.”

He has probably got money saved up. He has been privy to the escorted day leave program to go shopping. He could have hitched hike by now to where ever he wanted to go because it took so long to do a media release.

Too much red tape. They need to get rid of this red tape pronto. Once they take off they have lost all their rights to anonymity as far as I'm concerned.
I just hope he does not have the chance to commit another crime before he is caught.
Government will need to legislate on these cases so that they can be locked up forever up or build an impenetrable fence around "The village of the damned". JMOO

"He's not dangerous" --Orly. I think she forgot to add:

UNLESS YOU'RE 13 and expecting to live safely in your own home.

The guy clearly has no concept of respect for the system he's in - first he does a bunk interstate, goes back inside, is handed a cushy transitional place and feels it's perfectly fine to slip his tracker and do another runner.

The man has something wrong with him. He is a rapist. And obviously has very little control of himself.

I hope he's caught very soon, and I hope he's put back in for a long stretch.

I hope one of the Biggest Losers from Ararat kicks his ugly butt. Joking of course, I hope they don't go near him because he is dangerous. Let's hope he's found quickly and locked away forever. I worry that if he reoffends it won't be a rape, it will be rape and murder.

How hypocritical of him complaining about his co-residents that they are disgusting in their behaviour and talk. Why does he think he is in there? Obviously his 9 years in gaol were not productive to his rehabilitation so therefore he was deemed unsafe to be in the community. He probably didn't know how to play the game as others have gone before him conning their way through the system. Iirc he did the whole 9 years without time off. That says something about his time spent in gaol. He must think he is a cut above the rest. JMOO

"Darling, who often wears camouflage clothing, is believed to be the seventh person to have absconded since the Corella Place facility opened eight years ago.

The village-style complex, next to Ararat prison, houses about 35 prisoners who cannot be released into the community due to risk of reoffending. There are no walls surrounding the open facility, but offenders are monitored with GPS ankle bracelets."

:what:

So .. these perps have a high risk of re-offending, so we put them in a low security place with no walls ?!!! Unfreakingbelievable! :shakehead:

Ararat prison escapee Andrew Darling still on the run

POLICE are urging Ararat landowners to remain vigilant, as convicted child rapist Andrew Darling remains on the run.

Darling escaped from Ararat's Corella Place correctional centre shortly after 2.30am Sunday.

He left on foot.

Police have urged landowners to be aware around sheds and outhouses on their properties and to report anything suspicious to police.

They have also asked residents who notice stolen food or clothing to contact police.

"Darling escaped from Corella Place, a facility for offenders who have completed a prison sentence but are deemed an unacceptable risk to the community.

Ms Shuard said the tracking devices are difficult to take off.

“It is locked on, but of course these things can be cut off with some effort,’’ she said."

Does this even make any sense?! They know that the tracking device can be cut off, they know the perp is an unacceptable risk to the community, so they use tracking devices and no walls to protect the community from the unacceptable risk.

JULY 08, 2014: Police warned public about child rapist Andrew Darling’s escape after trail went cold

POLICE admit they only decided to go public with news that a child rapist had fled Ararat’s “Village of the Damned” after the initial trail went cold.

Andrew Darling, who raped a 13-year-old girl in 2000, escaped from the Corella Place centre, which houses some of Victoria’s worst sex offenders, at 2.30am on Sunday.

Police say they were still tracking Darling at 9am at nearby Green Hill Lake before the sniffer dog lost his scent.

Victoria Police released news of Darling’s escape shortly after 10am, more than seven hours after he absconded.

The lake is between Corella Place and the Western Highway, raising the possibility that Darling could have hitched a ride towards Ballarat or Melbourne.
