The death penalty trial of a man charged in the 2014 killing of a Gary police officer is now expected to begin Jan. 30.

In a brief hearing Tuesday in Crown Point, defense attorney Rich Wolter Jr., said the delay was necessary "to accommodate some jury selection process matters," and was agreed to by prosecutors. The trial had been expected to being three weeks earlier.

Blount, who is accused of fatally shooting Gary police officer Jeffrey Westerfield, and Darren Vann, accused of slaying seven women, are each facing the death penalty in cases before the Lake County Superior Court.

They each have argued in recent court filings that Indiana's death penalty law is unconstitutional.

On Thursday, their attorneys presented their arguments before a judge.

While the two defendants have separate, unrelated cases, their attorneys made many of the same arguments, even playing off what happened in the other's hearing. Lawyers on both sides got into the nitty gritty of their arguments, with Judge Samuel Cappas flipping through a reference book as the attorneys referenced stacks of court cases.

Attorneys and Judge Samuel Cappas continued the laborious process Thursday afternoon of laying the groundwork for the trial of Carl Blount, who faces the death penalty on allegations he murdered Gary Patrolman Jeffrey Westerfield.

Cappas dismissed several prospective jurors parties agreed were disqualified to serve at trial, including a Lake County Sheriff’s Department corrections officer, a non-native English speaking Croatian woman, and a Jehovah’s witness who opposed the death penalty.
