    MO - Tony 'Gene' Cory-Ferguson, 5, Harrisonville, 8 July 2014

Boy with autism missing in Cass County

    HARRISONVILLE, Mo. —
A five-year old boy with autism walked away from his house along 7 Highway south of Harrisonville at about 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, and many law enforcement units have been called on to help find him. A Kansas City police helicopter and the Missouri Highway Patrol, Garden City Police and the Cass County Sheriff Department are all involved in the search for the boy who goes by the name of “Gene.”

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

"When from a long distant past nothing persists, after the people are dead, after things are broken and scattered, still alone, more persistent, more faithful, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long, long time like souls, ready to remind us, waiting, hoping for their moment amid the ruins of all the rest, and bear unfaltering in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence the vast structure of recollection."

This is not the first time he's wandered, but they don't have a full name or description?

Also, he's five. I know parenting a child with autism is challenging, but how many times does he need to wander off before CPS gets involved?

    How far could he be?

I try not to judge parents who "lose" a wandering child.... kids can be very resourceful if they want to be. However, if it has happened before, I would like the parents / caregivers to indicate some security measures were in place.

You can only do so much. My 4 year old special needs daughter isn't autistic but has another condition which shares many of the characteristics. In the last year she has become a wanderer but never far enough we can't catch her. Back in May she started running off while doing other things. For example, we would be getting out of the car and I'd unhook her then we would unhook my 4 year old and twice while walking in front of me from driveway to porch, she pulled a "duck and run" and just took off.

So that is something you can only control so much when budgets are tight and it san every day thing you can't avoid doing.

Now indoors is different. We secondary locks we installed with permission from our landlord. She tries to get them open and can't and they are way above her reach even anything she would climb on

I really think a micro chip gps locator would be so helpful.

I know they make watches and little tags that can be attached to shoes/backpacks/dog collars. Unfortunately they can be expensive and also require a monthly upkeep fee. I hope as technology advances the prices will go down and it will be a real option for families.

There are grants available to fund gps devices for children with autism. Google Avonte's Law. The more difficult problem is where to keep it on a child with sensory issues who barely agrees to wear clothes..
