"A 31-year-old supply teacher with the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) has died in hospital after an early morning triple shooting in Toronto’s Lawrence Heights neighbourhood. He was the city’s 23rd homicide victim.

Abshir Hassan, of Toronto, and two other people — a 22-year-old man and a 18-year-old woman — were shot multiple times outside a low-rise apartment building at 11 Flemington Rd., near Lawrence Avenue West and the Allen Expressway, at 12:15 a.m. on Tuesday.

The TDSB told CityNews he was a supply teacher at a number of schools, including Charles H. Best Middle School in North York and Lawrence Heights Middle School in Toronto.

Lawrence Heights principal David Debelle said Hassan was “beloved by all the students and parents.” Fighting tears, Debelle said he routinely volunteered his time and was a “role model” to young students.

“If any student had a problem or needed someone to talk to, he was the individual to lend an ear and give advice. He was a tremendous role model.”

Police said a vehicle pulled up on the roadway just outside the apartment building and “multiple shots were fired.”

" Police are searching for multiple suspects who pulled up in a vehicle and fired a "significant" number of gunshots at close range, striking each victim multiple times, Insp. Tim Crone told reporters at the scene.

Officers who were patrolling the neighbourhood heard the gunshots and found the victims, who were rushed to a trauma centre by paramedics.

Hassan died in hospital hours later, while the other two victims were listed in serious but non-life-threatening condition.

People who live in the building said the younger male victim is a DJ and the female victim is his girlfriend.

After the shooting, officers spent hours looking for evidence at the scene and canvassing the neighbourhood for witnesses. Police found several shell casings on the ground near the doorway of the apartment building.

Police also towed a silver Toyota Camry from a visitors’ parking area. Neighbours believe the car belongs to one of the victims.

The victims were not known to police before the shooting, police told CP24 reporter Cam Woolley."

"The principal said Hassan went beyond his role as a teacher, spending his lunch hour playing basketball in the gym and volunteering to be the DJ at the grade eight graduation party last month.

“That’s the kind of person he was,” Debelle said.

“He’s not a fighter. I’ve never seen him fight anyone,” said a friend who only who indentified himself as Sam. “He was the best guy ever.”

Sam was told by people in the area that Hassan was just moving his car to avoid getting a ticket. “Some people approached him and that was it.”

“He was the nicest person I’ve ever met,” said 15-year-old Nardos Abraha. She and her friend Cyrika Gunn, 16, were enrolled in the Beyond 3:30 program three years ago but remained friends with Hassan after they began high school."

"Police said a vehicle pulled up on the roadway just outside the apartment building and “multiple shots were fired.” Police on patrol in the area heard several gunshots and responded to the scene.

Ambulance officials rushed the three victims to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Insp. Tim Crone said the two other people are “very seriously injured and still in hospital.”

Police believe Hassan may have been going outside to move his vehicle when he was shot. Police had towed a silver Toyota Camry from the scene earlier in the day, and it’s believed to be his vehicle.

“This is obviously a horrendous event [that's] taken place … a very brazen and cowardly act to the community that has made great strides in the last few years to bring a sense of calm of safety to the area,” Crone said."

"As of right now, we have yet to establish a motive," Toronto Police Det. Sgt. Steve Ryan said Wednesday outside 11 Flemington Rd. "We have three law-abiding productive members of this community who were at a birthday party, all went outside and were all shot within minutes of being outside."

It was just after midnight that 31-year-old Abshir Hassan left the building to move his car and the gunfire rang out. Two others — a 22-year-old man and his 18-year-old girlfriend — who had also just stepped outside, were also shot. They remained in hospital Wednesday in serious condition, but are expected to survive.

"Our deceased went out to move his car because he dropped a friend off at the party and his car was parked in the fire route and there was concern about getting it tagged and when he left the party and went out outside, all three were fired on," Ryan said. "At this point, I don't believe any of them were targeted. There's absolutely no motive for this shooting."

Asked how he makes sense of such a situation, Ryan responded, "We don't."
