Body of Marine's missing wife found in mine shaft
    August 19, 2014

The search finally ended Saturday when a body was spotted with a video camera 140 feet down a mine shaft on federal land near Twentynine Palms, where she had been living.

In a little more than 24 hours, authorities had recovered and identified the remains of Erin Corwin and arrested her former neighbor and alleged lover, 24-year-old former Marine Christopher Brandon Lee, in Anchorage, Alaska, on suspicion of homicide.

"The manner of death has been determined to be homicide," San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon said Monday, adding that deputies searched many of the 100 mine shafts in a 300 square mile area before zeroing in on the one that contained Corwin.

    snip

Other evidence was found in the shaft — one of more than 100 in the area — but sheriff's officials declined to give details.

Authorities also declined to release the exact manner of death and said they could not confirm Corwin's pregnancy until an autopsy was completed.

Corwin would have been 20 if alive, but authorities say she likely died before her birthday.

"Let's just wait until the facts come out before jumping to conclusions," Bob Lee, Christopher's father, told an Associated Press reporter during a brief interview outside the family's home in a working class neighborhood in Anchorage. He said the arrest came as his son and daughter-in-law, Nichole Lee, were returning home.

CBS News 8 has learned has learned Lee may have had an incriminating internet search history on his computer, which is what may have led investigators to zero in on the hundreds of mine shafts around Joshua Tree National Park.
"We were able to determine a potential location of Erin Corwin's body," Newport said.

Prosecutor: Former Marine Murdered Comrade's Wife
    POSTED: 03:36 PM AKDT Aug 19, 2014

Christopher Brandon Lee was arraigned in Anchorage Jail Court Tuesday afternoon, after being arrested by Anchorage police on a California homicide warrant Sunday night. He did not waive his right to an extradition hearing, a move hoped for by law enforcement officers in California.

In another point of contention with prosecutors, Lee asked to speak with his attorney, despite the prosecution's claim that he didn't have one. A discussion in court revealed that the attorney is based in California and can't practice law in Alaska, leading to the scheduling of an Alaska representation hearing for Lee.

Suspect in murder of Marine wife in California appears in Anchorage court
    August 19, 2014

The state has charged Christopher Brandon Lee, 24, for being a fugitive from justice. Assistant District Attorney Heather Nobrega requested bail be set at $2 million “cash only,” which the court granted.

    snip

A California Superior Court issued two arrest warrants for Lee. One set Lee’s bail at $2 million; the other had a no bail condition. Alaska requires setting bail and adheres to the amount decided by the Outside court, Nobrega said.

    snip

Lee appeared for his hearing wearing red prison clothing, instead of the yellow that most Anchorage jail inmates wear. The difference typically indicates that inmate is segregated from the general population.

A look at the mine shaft where Marine wife's body was dumped

YouTube video posted by the Southern California Off Road Explorers shows the Rose of Peru Mine in 2012 near Joshua Tree National Park. Even with a closer look down, all you see is a black hole. At the bottom, 140 down under the ground, is where investigators found Corwin's body along with .22 caliber cartridge casings and rebar that detectives say match what was found in her alleged ex-lover Christopher Lee's Jeep Cherokee and home.

Desert mines made for tough Erin Corwin search

Erin Corwin's body was found 140 feet down an old gold mine shaft in the remote creosote-dotted wilderness just north of the Joshua Tree National Park boundary. But the spot where her body landed equivalent to about a 14-floor fall was far from the very bottom of the Rose of Peru mine, which is estimated to be at least 250 feet deep.

    snip

Martinez said Corwin's body was discovered on a "false floor" in the mine shaft, where debris collects in one area and blocks the rest of the passage to the bottom of the mine.

"Miss Corwin's body landed on that debris field," she said, adding that Corwin's body could have fallen much further. "We couldn't even see how deep it went."

Erin Corwin: Christopher Lee's legal tangle
    August 22, 2014

But several readers have questioned who actually has jurisdiction in the case because of a couple of complicating factors: Corwin's body was found in a mine shaft on federal land owned by the Bureau of Land Management and, if Corwin was killed shortly after her disappearance the crime would have been committed while Lee was still an active duty Marine. He didn't receive his honorable discharge until July 7.

Christopher Lee's attorney discusses Erin Corwin case
    August 22, 2014

Not even the lawyer representing Christopher Brandon Lee, who is charged with first-degree murder in the killing of 19-year-old Marine wife Erin Corwin, knows when his client will return to California.

    snip

"It's all for security purposes they don't tell anyone," Kaloyanides added. "I was speaking with the (district attorney) down here and he said he wouldn't even know until he's actually here."

    August 23, 2014

There will be a candlelight vigil for Erin Corwin from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday at Luckie Park, on the corner of Utah Trail and Joe Davis Road in Twentynine Palms, Corwin's husband told The Desert Sun Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted in memory of Erin, "for the San Bernardino Search and Rescue team who brought her home," a statement by the vigil organizers said.

Erin Corwin husband Jon Corwin has 'closure'

As the search dragged on and on, Jonathan Corwin clung to a dark kind of hope.

His wife, Erin, had been missing for weeks. She had vanished without explanation, launching a mystery in the high desert, where vast empty spaces remain wild and dangerous.

And while Jonathan never lost hope that Erin would be found, he admitted to himself that she would not be found alive. Answers were the best he could hope for. When her body was finally discovered, crumpled in an abandoned mineshaft, Jonathan felt more relief than loss.

    snip

Jonathan has previously declined all interview requests, insisting he was emotionally unprepared to talk about Erin. On Monday, the mourning husband said he believed finally speaking publicly — coupled with the vigil — would help him heal and move on.

The Corwins first met in middle school, and started dating a few years later. They were married in November 2012, and Erin moved to the high desert last September, while Jonathan was deployed in Okinawa.

    snip

Jonathan said Erin was a quiet young woman who loved animals — especially horses — and dreamed of raising children. She was also extremely shy, and would have been terrified by the media spotlight that was drawn to the mystery of her disappearance.

On the day Erin disappeared, she woke about 7 a.m., then prepared for a trip into the desert. Erin told him she was headed to nearby Joshua Tree National Park to take pictures. Jonathan was still in bed.

"I said 'OK. I love you,' " Jonathan said Monday. "She gave me a kiss. And then she left."

    snip

On Monday, Jonathan said he had once called Lee a friend.

The Lees had been neighbors of the Corwins since last fall, when Jonathan and Erin moved into an apartment building on the Twentynine Palms base. Jonathan and Lee shared a passion for off-roading and recreational shooting, and their wives both volunteered at the same horse ranch, so the neighbors became fast friends. They hung out "almost every day," Jonathan said.

In March, Jonathan discovered Chris and Erin had a brief affair. However, Jonathan believed the fling was over, and so he had made amends with his wife and tried to forgive his neighbor. Jonathan didn't discover the affair had continued until after Erin had disappeared.

Even now, Jonathan tries to forgive.

Erin Corwin death: Christopher Lee pleads not guilty
    August 26, 2014

Christopher Lee, 24, made his first appearance in a California courtroom on Tuesday after being extradited from Alaska. He wore a gray prisoner's jumpsuit and had full beard and finely combed hair. The hearing lasted only a few minutes, and Lee barely spoke.

    snip

"It's going to take a while, in a case of this magnitude, to get any information from the DA's office, so we can evaluate the evidence is," Kaloyanides said. "There are a lot of different angles to investigate, and (we need) to see what they have."

Lee's wife, Nichole, did not attend the arraignment hearing. Erin's husband, Marine Cpl. Jonathan Corwin, sat quietly in the back of the room with his father Tom.

Lee is schedule to return to court for another hearing on Sept. 16.

Ex-Marine pleads not guilty in murder of Erin Corwin; Coroner seals autopsy

Christopher Brandon Lee, 24, entered the plea Tuesday to first-degree murder with a special allegation of lying in wait. The San Bernardino County District Attorney will decide whether to seek the death penalty at a future date.

Lee was arrested in Alaska on Aug. 17 after the body of 19-year-old Erin Corwin was found down a 100-foot mine shaft near Joshua Tree in the Mojave Desert. The Tennessee native went missing June 28.

Corwin murder suspect pleads not guilty

News Channel 3 and CBS Local 2 were in the courtroom when Lee was arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Lee wore a dark blue jumpsuit. His beard was clean-shaved and his hair was clean-cut as he faced judge Rod Cortez and pleaded not guilty to murder charges.

Cortez said Lee faces charges in Erin's murder and a special circumstance allegation of "lying in wait," which means he will be held in jail without bail.

Ex-Marine Lee pleads not guilty to killing Ridger
    By Russel Langley/The Oak Ridger
    Posted Sep. 2, 2014 @ 2:14 pm

    [...]

If Lee is found guilty of the murder he could face the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole because of a lying in wait enhancement to the murder charge. San Bernardino County (Calif.) District Attorney Michael Ramos has also told the press that if an autopsy confirms that Erin was more than four to six weeks pregnant, Lee could face a second murder charge for the unborn baby.
