Zuber’s mother, Martha Zuber, said he was going out with a few friends. She said she wasn’t concerned when he didn’t come home on Saturday or Sunday night because he had been drinking and would often find friends to stay with so that he wouldn’t be driving.

She became concerned when she found out that Zuber had not shown up for work at the TGI Fridays at 7635 state Route 96 in Victor on Monday evening...

The last known contact from Zuber, according to his cousin, Adrienne Pugliese, was a text message sent from Zuber’s phone at around 1 a.m. that went to a friend. The text message said “Please help me.” Zuber’s mother said that when she tries to call his phone, it goes straight to voicemail.
This is the third case I've seen lately where someone texted "help" just before vanishing. WTH? If you have time to text, you have time to dial 911, for Pete's sake.

According to Wayne County Undersheriff Rick House, a dive team was at the Erie Canal this morning near the intersection of Alderman Road and Route 31, near where the last communication with Zumber was recorded. That search turned up no results...

Zuber’s mother stated that investigators were able to track a reading off of Zuber’s phone at 3:20 a.m. on Sunday morning on Quaker Road. A helicopter was sent to the area but nothing was found...

On July 16, the police reviewed the security cameras from The Sandbar but were unable to get anything conclusive from them. Hetzke said that they are currently interviewing people who saw Zuber on Saturday evening and have reason to believe he left The Sandbar because his car is no longer there. Currently, they are concentrating on traffic routes from the bar.

I hear ya, but I believe people become frightened and reach out in the manner that is quickest and most familiar to them. For many of us, younger people, especially, that means texting. It's a reflex, just like screaming out "help!".

Also, the victim cannot speak on the phone without being detected.

Sad to report to this very tragic end...my thoughts are with his friends and family.

News10NBC has learned that the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office has found the vehicle of a missing man in the Erie Canal in the town of Macedon. Deputies say there is a body inside that vehicle.

The Wayne County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that the Sheriff's Marine Division and Scuba Divers have located the missing town of Macedon man, 22-year-old James M. Zuber, and his vehicle in the Erie Canal near the intersection of Alderman Road and Rt. 31 in the town of Macedon...

Because there were no signs of the vehicle’s brakes having been applied, deputies believe that Mr. Zuber failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of Alderman Road and Rt. 31 and continued through the intersection into the canal.

Wayne County Sheriff’s deputies say they found the body of a Macedon man, who had been missing since Sunday.
Investigators say 22-year-old James Zuber’s Chevy Malibu was found in the Erie Canal in Macedon and his body was found inside.
    ...
Even though he hadn’t returned any text messages, there was still no worry until Tuesday when his job called looking for him. The Zubers called police. After two days of searching, the 22-year-old’s car was found submerged in the Erie Canal. It was only minutes away from home.
Martha Zuber said, “It's a road that he's driven all the time, taking back roads out in Canandaigua. Whether a deer ran out in front of him or he fell asleep. He was not one to drink and drive."
