FL - Marterrance Albury, 4, dies in hit & run, Tampa, 21 July 2014

Tampa, FL police are investigating the horrific death of a four year old child found on a road, who a witness says 'came from a car' around 9.45pm Sunday.

'Marterrance Albury is believed to have been either dropped off or thrown out of a SUV at around 9.45pm in Tampa, Florida. He landed on his head and was run over by the back wheels, police said.
Witnesses called 911 after spotting the boy in the middle of the road. He was taken to hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries.'

'The boy was in the care of his 17-year-old brother at the time of his death, a police statement revealed today, after his mother, Johntea Williams, 36, went on a night out with a friend'

Late Monday night, police revealed that investigators had obtained video from a surveillance camera that forced them to question the original story reported to 911 on Sunday night — that the child fell out of the SUV. The boy may have wandered into the street and been the victim of a hit-and-run, police said.

Investigators are trying to get video with a higher resolution to help solve the mystery.

    July 2014:

Based on physical evidence, witness statements and the surveillance videos, investigators say "it appears" the child was the victim of a hit-and-run or a traffic crash in which the driver did not realize the boy had been struck...

"I cried and cried and I cried until I had bags under my eyes," said Terrance Albury, the boy's father. "I can't cry no more."

Albury just got out of prison a few weeks ago. He had been hoping to get to know the boy behind that smile a bit better.

"I'm kind of speechless right now," he said...

According to TPD, [mother] Johntea Williams arrived home at 4 a.m. and was hospitalized under the state’s Baker Act upon learning about her son’s death. She remains in the hospital and has yet to be formally interviewed by police.

The boy's older brother was interviewed on Monday and released. According to Williams, he is "not talking, not responding, just crying."

"He feels like it's his fault and it's not," she said.

Johntea Williams voice is scratchy. Her eyes bloodshot. The mother barely has a voice. She says she has spent the last 24 hours crying and screaming over her son's death.

"I just want my son back," said Wiliams in a sit-down interview with ABC Action News Tuesday...

Williams shared videos of her son playing and one video of him handing his mother a rose. As she watched the videos with ABC Action News, Williams wept and repeatedly asked for a moment alone.

Police believe the boy walked out of his apartment and into the road while his 17-year-old brother, who was left in charge of the boy, was playing video games. Police say the teen is mentally challenged.

"He always watched him," Williams said.

About 20 minutes after the incident was reported, Marterrance's 17-year-old brother walked up to officers at the scene and said he could not find his little brother, police said...

Williams returned to her apartment about 4 a.m., where officers told her what happened. She became hysterical, and made statements about wanting to end her own life, McElroy said.

The family has had brushes with authorities in the past. The Hillsborough sheriff's child protective investigations division opened two cases involving the family, according to the Florida Department of Children and Families. Neither directly involved Marterrance.

Police were called to the apartment three months ago by the boys' mother after she had tried to discipline her 17-year-old by taking his PlayStation 3 and cellphone.

According to a Tampa police report, he had pushed his mother, grabbed her hair, slammed her to the floor and punched her. He was arrested for a misdemeanor battery and taken into custody as a juvenile.

Mother pleads for hit and run driver to turn self in on one year anniversary

    July 2015:

Clutching her son's favorite Matchbox car, JohnTea Williams can barely speak through her tears.

One year ago today, her 4-year-old son Marterrance Albury was struck and killed by a hit-and-run driver in the southbound lanes of North Florida Avenue...

At the time, police reported that Williams's teenage son was slow or had some sort of mental handicapped and he should not have been left watching his brother.

Williams told ABC Action News police were wrong, explaining her son just graduated high school and was accepted at two colleges...

She said this year has not been easy and she has contemplated suicide many times so she can be in heaven with her son...

Tampa Police say the investigation into this case is still open.
