Thomas Chester Malinka, the man charged with the 2013 murder of his Branford neighbor whose body is still missing, on Thursday morning saw New Haven Superior Court Patrick J. Clifford continue his case to Sept. 9. Malinka, 44, has not yet entered a plea...

Malinka’s alleged victim, John Deveau, was last seen on May 24, 2013. Deveau resided at 33 Crouch Road, Unit C. Malinka had been renting an adjacent home from Deveau at the time of Deveau’s disappearance. Deveau, who was 61 years old at the time he went missing, was described by police as having an “extensive medical history.”

Malinka faces more charges than his one count of murder. He is also charged with felony credit card theft, first-degree felony larceny and a misdemeanor for fraudulent use of an ATM. Those three charges stem from a Jan. 2, 2013, incident in which police say Malinka illegally used Deveau’s credit cards to withdraw $30,000.

According to police, John Francis Deveau last was seen the morning of May 26, 2013, pumping gas at a Stop & Shop station on North Main Street.

Despite Deveau's disappearance, police charged Malinka early last month with his murder. The 15-page arrest warrant weaves together accounts from a neighbor, a list of odd charges made to Deveau's American Express card, suspicious answers Malinka allegedly provided during questioning, a faulty alibi and, likely most damning, "red-like blood substances" police say were discovered inside Malinka's car featuring DNA that matches Deveau's.

Berg agreed to share what she knew about Deveau’s background. Until she called, efforts to reach anyone who knew Deveau had been fruitless. Berg said she was not surprised to hear that. “He was exceedingly private,” she said. “A bit of a loner but a sweet man. He had been a vibrant sailor and craftsman and real estate person”...

When police first announced Deveau’s disappearance, the listing indicated he suffered from an undisclosed medical condition. Berg said Deveau suffered severe injuries and possibly brain damage several years ago after accidentally driving his truck off a cliff in Nova Scotia...

She reached out to Deveau more and more after the auto accident. Berg recalled Deveau talking about a man who moved into the cottage on his property. She could not remember whether Deveau ever mentioned his name, but she said she suspects it was Malinka.

Is there a site I can go on to find out the current status of Malinka? The most recent mention of him that I can find is from last year, stating that his next court date is Jan 15.

NEW HAVEN >> After a prosecutor agreed to offer Thomas Malinka a plea deal so he would lead authorities to the dismembered body parts of John Deveau, he received a reduced sentence Friday by which he will serve 12 years in prison.

Under the agreement, Malinka last December pleaded guilty to first-degree larceny and tampering with evidence. The murder charge was dropped.

Although Malinka did then lead authorities to two locations, more than a mile apart, where he said he disposed of Deveau’s remains, the body parts recovered there were not extensive. The first site yielded Deveau’s bones from his sternum to his knees. The second site yielded nothing.

Strollo said the bones “had telltale signs of saw marks. This is when the state first became aware the defendant dismembered John Deveau’s body.”

“We will never know the circumstances of John Deveau’s death,” Strollo told Clifford. “But we do know that his remains met an ignominious end at the hands of the defendant. Thomas Malinka cut up and butchered John Deveau’s body and unceremoniously placed his partial torso and thighs in a garbage bag and threw such cut-up remains down over a small ledge. The defendant never even bothered to bury this part of him. John’s head, hands and feet were never found.”
