Tony Briscoe and Mark Hicks/The Detroit News

Armada — Authorities are searching for a backpack, clothing as well as a gray van as part of their investigating into a possible homicide of a female found in a wooded area on the border with the Village of Armada.

A person walking in the area of Fulton and Depot roads at 8:25 p.m. Thursday reported the body of a female in woods adjacent to a residential area. Macomb County Medical Examiner's Office officials said Friday that the female was unidentified.

Police were investigating if the body was related to one of two missing person cases in the area, Armada Police Chief Howard Smith said. The first was reported in Washington Township in the last three days; the other involved an Armada youth who didn't return home Thursday evening, he said...

ARMADA (WWJ) - Police in northern Macomb County have confirmed a body found in a wooded area near a nature trail is that of a missing 14-year-old Armada girl — and that she was murdered.

Armada Police Chief Howard Smith said April Dawn Millsap’s mother reported her missing after the teen didn’t return home from walking her dog, which she does nearly every night.

April’s body was discovered along the Macomb Orchard Trail around 8:25 p.m. Thursday near Fulton and Depot roads, north of 33 Mile Road in Armada.

Her identity was confirmed the following day...

According to Michigan State Police and the Armada Police Department, authorities are looking for a long, gray box van that was seen in the area of the crime scene. This is described as a painter’s type van that eyewitnesses said had dents all over it.

According to a Michigan State Police press release, the van was occupied by two white males. It has not been determined what role the van may play in this investigation...

“At this time we do not have any new information on the case as far as cause of death. The medical examiner is working hard to find that cause of death and we are waiting on word from them.

Armada Police Chief Howard Smith said Millsap had left her house to walk her border collie, but when she didn't return about an hour later, her parents called police.

Smith said Millsap's dog stayed with her body until two people who were walking the trail noticed it.

Police looking for gray van, 2 men

Michigan State police have released the picture of a gray painters-like van with dents on it that was seen in the area of the crime scene.

It was occupied by two white men.

Video isn't available yet, but WDIV, Channel 4 reports since 4:00 this afternoon have included interviews with others who have reported seeing the "box van" in the vicinity of the walking path. One woman called it a "white" van, and in photos/video that I've seen, the van looks more like "dirty white" than "gray". Another individual who was interviewed has submitted a license plate number for the van. Hopefully, these leads will help investigators locate the suspect vehicle quickly. Poor April. :rose:

I'm sorry this happened to you sweetie. I hope they catch whatever monster did this to you right away.

Prayers going up for her family and friends and her poor loyal dog. I hope someone is holding that puppy tonight.

What's the name of the other missing person in that area? Do they have a thread?

The van maybe a red herring. I'm thinking this is a case of someone known to the girl. She walked that same path almost every evening. LE says she was not sexually assaulted. Her dog stayed with her. The killer likely was known to the dog also, no mention of blood from the dog biting anyone. This link has a video of the path she was walking on, it is not made for cars. It is very over grown on the edges of the path where someone could hide.

No, read the last paragraph in post #2, it implies police thought the body could belong to one of TWO very recent missing persons reports so I'm wondering if there's another victim in the area. The problem is, I can't find that paragraph in the article linked in post 2 so I don't know if the other person was found. Maybe the article was edited?

In one of the reports about April, there was mention of a missing young woman from Washington that is in Macomb County, southwest of Armada. I hadn't heard about the case, haven't found details about it, and there doesn't appear to be a thread.

Jessica Heeringa went missing on the west side of the state along Lake Michigan. Armada and Washington are much farther east.

One of the people who was interviewed on WDIV got the license plate number of a vehicle that was actually driving on the path. She has contacted authorities with the information. Not all the video reports appear in Channel 4 articles on the www.clickondetroit.com website.

Note: The Macomb Daily is likely to be a good resource as it is specific to the county where Armada is located. Oakland Press and Royal Oak Tribune are part of the same local news organization and frequently have similar content.

Wow! So Sad she was so young :( Another incident close to home and I have many friends in that area. I'm sure the town will not be at peace until this is solved. RIP April <3

This is so sad. Her poor family. She is just 14 years old.

Wow someone got the license plate! TG

April's walk usually only took 30 minutes. Also now LE is looking for a motorcycle.

Police are searching for a large gray box van that was occupied by two white males. Detectives are also seeking information on a blue and white "small cc motorcycle" after receiving tips. According to a news release, the motorcycle is . The tips indicated a young male rider wearing a black helmet was seen riding on the trail around the time April was killed.

Anyone with information is urged to call state police at 877-616-4677.

There is a donation site set to help April's family. I'll assume that this is for funeral expenses. Please keep April's family in your thoughts and prayers. There is going to be a prayer vigil this evening at the Catholic church that April attended.

Is there a lake in the area? Is that why she was in a draingage ditch?

Small town of 2000 people, hoping someone knows something.
