Police questioned a 14-year-old boy in the case, and at one time tried to link the death to Lewis Lent, who has since been convicted of murdering two children. But 25 years later, police still have not made an arrest.

Mei-Ling was reported missing from the Phelan Court Apartments at 7 a.m. on July 21, 1989. She was out early that Friday morning to collect bottles and cans to turn in for the nickel deposits...

Her body was found in the woods bordering the public housing complex four days later. Mei-Ling had been sexually assaulted. Authorities said it could not be determined if she was strangled, choked or smothered to death. The community raised money to pay for the funeral expenses.
