In 1917 Cincinnati Police Detective Wegener was killed by a robber suspect
Reportably a suspect was id but not charged due to lack of evidence

Suspect was Fred Clifford b.Jan 1890/1891 resident of Lousivile Ky and a ex convict
Appears in US Census for 1900 and 1910 with parents and Siblings
not listed in US Censuse for 1920 and 1930 with either parents or siblings

The US began registering men for the military draft in 1917. Men aged 17 to about 35 were required by law to register.

Registration did not mean that they were drafted or that they served in the Military, but the records might have some valuable information about the person. Fred Clifford was about 27 in 1917.
 
Just a thought--in 1918, the flu pandemic caused 50 million deaths, more than the war. If he dropped out of sight after 1917, he may possibly have been a victim of the flu.
