NM - Audrey Kaplan, 75, Santa Fe NF, 30 July 2014

Audrey Richman Kaplan was last seen hiking on the Windsor trail near the ski basin. She was wearing a gray long-sleeved shirt and white pants. Kaplan was looking for mushrooms with her husband before they got separated.

Friends who hike with Kaplan said she is strong-willed and independent. "She is self-sufficient in her own way," said friend Judy Allison. "There's hope for sure... Audrey is a very experienced hiker. It's what she loves to do."

Officials began tracking a distinct boot and hiking pole pattern Wednesday, but the markings disappeared into brush with no sign of Kaplan.

By 10 p.m. Thursday, the rain cleared up, but it created some flooding and now slick and steep terrain that makes it dangerous out there.

“It’s treacherous because of the rain, the forest has burned extensively in several of the areas we’re looking so there’s blow down, there’s trees that are unstable, falling hazards, tripping hazards, steep slopes, cliffs, you name it, it’s up there,” said Peter Dickson, Incident Commander with Search and Rescue...

Search crews said Thursday they have two good leads. They found two sets of tracks they believe could be Kaplan’s, and they’ve had two separate calls from hikers saying they thought they heard a woman shouting for help Wednesday.

There are more than 80 people actively involved in the search for 75-year-old Audrey Kaplan near the ski basin.

There are also search and scent dogs out and aircraft will be sent up weather permitting...

She’s spent two nights up there now.

New Mexico State Police said the search, which was suspended Friday night for safety reasons, turned up one hopeful sign that later proved a false lead. Crews found a set of hiking poles they thought may have belonged to Kaplan, who reportedly was carrying poles as she foraged for mushrooms. But the poles belonged to another hiker, police learned later.

And following Kaplan’s tracks proved difficult, because recent rainy weather likely washed them away.

“Basically, there have been not new signs or clues to help in resolving the search,” state police spokesman Sgt. Damyan Brown wrote in an email Friday night.

Nothing since Saturday. I'm afraid it's probably a recovery effort rather than a rescue at this point.

She's from Dallas, her husband is a doctor and professor.
Authorities near Santa Fe, New Mexico are continuing their search for Audrey Kaplan, the wife of a UT Southwestern Medical Center professor.
The 75-year-old has been missing since Wednesday morning when, state police said, she went out searching for mushrooms with her husband, Dr. Norman Kaplan, in the Santa Fe National Forest.

Crews searching for a 75-year-old woman who was reported missing in the Sangre de Cristo wilderness Wednesday evening reported early Monday afternoon that they had found a Trader Joe’s bag that she might have been carrying as well as a bag that might have contained the poncho she took with her into the mountains.

Searchers also reported finding kindling from a possible fire in the forest north of the ski basin.

I was really holding out hope for her... due to her friends and family saying she was very strong-willed and independent, and an experienced hiker. So sad.

Nice article about her, unfortunate loss. I'm sorry they didn't find her sooner.

Kaplan attended the Santa Fe Opera and loved dining out and “had a lot of friends,” said Allison. Kaplan and her husband would get to Santa Fe in July and leave in mid-September but “they started staying later, they loved it here so much,” according to Allison.
