A man who was preparing to move to Arkansas went missing in Calhoun prior to his departure. John Wood Jr., 22, was reported missing July 28, according to a Gordon County Sheriff’s Office spokesman...

“It’s just not like him to not contact his family in some way,” said Sandra Guthrie, Wood’s aunt. “He could call us collect. He would have done that.

“It just reeks of foul play. I’m just so scared now.”

Wood is 5-feet 9-inches tall, 180 pounds, and drives a 1997 blue and sliver Dodge Ram pickup truck with a broken rear tail lamp on the passengers side.

A family spokesman says Wood had planned to meet with his landlord in Georgia for a final walk-through and to collect his rental deposit on Thursday, July 27th, before leaving.

Witnesses say they saw a gold or tan colored van with Georgia license plate “PCS3475″ in the vicinity of his house in Calhoun... and that two men were attempting to enter the residence, but left abruptly when approached. Family members say Wood has not been seen since that incident... that multiple calls to Wood’s cell phone have gone directly to his voice-mail... and that his landlord had entered the home to find all of Wood’s belongings still in place.

Ainsworth filed the missing report and subsequent police investigations found that two suspicious white men in their late teens or early 20s visited Wood’s Calhoun apartment the Thursday before he was scheduled to move.

“The neighbor said they knocked on her door and one tried to come in,” Ainsworth said. “She said they were aggressive and she was scared of them and got their vehicle tag. John wasn’t home then, but they came back later when he was there and the neighbor said John seemed scared.”

Ainsworth... said her son just moved to Calhoun last month after living in Arkansas since early 2014.“He grew up in Arkansas, but moved to Pickens in 2012 when he graduated,” she said. “He worked at the Kroger in Jasper and moved back to Arkansas this past March. He moved to Calhoun this June, just for a month."

Oh I have a bad feeling about this one. I too wonder if there will be evidence of a drug connection. MOO

Good on the neighbor for being an alert citizen and getting the tag info. Hopefully that info brings a quick resolution to this case.

Very disturbing; I hope he is found safe.

If I was the helpful neighbor (who was observant & wise enough to note the tag #) I would be upset & worried that the news report pretty much named me.

IMO, It sounds like he was having some personal issues lately. Since his truck is still missing as well, I do hope that he just needed some time away. The men in the van sound suspicious, but thanks to the neighbor, I am sure they are being checked into. There are pictures of both vehicles on the Find site.

I guess LE has the van's tag number so they know who it's registered to, but can't find where it is right now? This flyer was posted today on the FB missing page, but another post on there yesterday said the van was found in Jonesboro, GA.

I'm confused.

Am pretty sure John's truck is still missing, so here's a pic of it:

Hmm. Read July 11 entry for all you need to know. Apparently, just days after picking up and moving with her to Georgia (her hometown, evidently), his pregnant girlfriend cheated on him and moved in with her ex. I scoped her FB and it appears she's all 'distraught' over his being missing.

I would almost bet the farm those dudes in the van did something to him (either her ex or her ex and his friends), and then took his truck and ditched it. Hope they're questioning the hell out of her.

John Jr. graduated high school with my daughter. I was friends with both his parents in high school... I can not imagine the nightmare that his family is going through... I pray he comes home soon....

Oh, no...

About 1 a.m. Sunday, deputies found a badly decomposed body in a heavily-wooded area off a field road on a local farm in northwestern Gordon County, according to the press release.

It's believed to be that of John "Johnny" Wesley Wood Jr., 22, of 373 Baker Road, Calhoun, who was reported missing July 28. Positive identification is pending examination by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab.

Witnesses came forward with information throughout the weekend that led detectives and GBI agents to the discovery. Wood's truck, which also had been missing, was found early Monday morning by the Gordon County sheriff's air unit in a remote area in southern Whitfield County.

Police are seeking 22-year-old Nathan Mark Neighbors. He is described as a white male with short brown hair, green eyes. He is six feet, one and weighs about 150 pounds. He is wanted for murder and robbery.

RIP Johnny. I wonder if one of those men are the girlfriends ex/new boyfriend?

Sorry to read he was killed. From the looks of those guys & their facebook friends, I am even more concerned for the safety of the neighbor who reported the van.
