840 DUTCH POLICE OFFICERS WORKING ON MH17

NOS-Journaal reports:
http://nos.nl/artikel/681783-840-agenten-werken-aan-mh17.html

840 Dutch police officers are currently working on MH17

Approximately 840 Dutch police officers are involved in the investigation into the disaster flight MH17. In The Netherlands, 750 police officers are active, in Ukraine about 90.
The investigation into the crash is the largest criminal investigation ever conducted by The Netherlands.
This is partly due to the large number of victims and that the fact that the crash site was abroad.
The Public Prosecution Service confirms that multiple prosecutors are leading the criminal investigation. One of them is in Ukraine. In The Netherlands, several officers are involved.
Many police officers support the bereaved families, deputy police chief Ruud Bik of the National Police mentioned in an interview with the NOS.
There are a hundred family detectives who assist them.
Furthermore, many police officers are working on the identification in Hilversum and the detection in Ukraine.
Bik would not divulge how many police officers are active in the criminal investigation, but it must be hundreds.

A team of 70 Dutch and Australian forensic experts has found human remains at the site of the flight MH17 crash in east Ukraine.

They made their discovery on their first full day of searching at the site, an area of some 35 sq km (13.5 sq miles) inside the conflict zone.

Local search parties found 227 of the 298 victims earlier and they were flown to the Netherlands for identification.

Fighting still rages, with 10 Ukrainian soldiers killed nearby on Thursday.

Why Wasn’t Civilian Air Traffic Banned from Ukraine’s Airspace? http://t.co/otdtkDePAH #MH17

Following today’s downing of a Malaysia Airlines 777 carrying 295 people, the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed it had issued warnings as far back as April about flying over parts of Ukraine. However, those warnings were for another part of the country—the contest region of Crimea that Russia occupied earlier this year, located south of where MH17 went down today. An FAA spokesperson told PM that the agency restricted flying over Crimea after Russia annexed the region because there was confusion over who was in charge of the airspace.

The agency said that the safety of flight operations could be in jeopardy because it was possible pilots could get confusing or contradictory directives from two different air traffic control authorities. Similarly, last month the U.K.’s Civil Aviation Authority told its carriers not to fly over Crimea, but didn’t restrict the rest of Ukrainian airspace. Ukraine itself told planes not to fly through its airspace at altitudes below 32,000 feet; Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 was at about 33,000 feet when it was shot down.

U.S. President Obama and Russian President Putin spoke by phone Aug. 1, the White House said, agreeing to keep communications open regarding Ukraine. Obama expressed concerns over an alleged breach of a 1988 treaty by Russia. It was their first conversation since the downing of MH17 on July 17.

INVESTIGATIONS NEAR A CHICKEN FARM (GRABOVO)

RTL-Nieuws reports:

http://www.rtlnieuws.nl/nieuws/binnenland/onderzoek-experts-bij-kippenboerderij-grabovo

Translation:

The team of forensic experts has performed investigations today near a chicken farm in the village of Grabovo. (*) That location had been extensively explored yesterday.

"This is close to the spot where the body of the airplane is located," said Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg, head of the repatriation mission in Donetsk. The investigation, which was performed by 30 experts, lasted from 14:00 pm to 16:15 pm.

At the spot, human remains and personal effects were found. "The bodies have been transported with the team's ambulance to Soledar, where they are kept in a refrigerated truck," Aalbersberg said.

Starting tomorrow the remains will be transported in refrigerated trucks to Kharkov, the location of the air bridge with The Netherlands. In Kharkov, a team of Dutch, Australian and Malaysian specialists are ready to transport the remains and personal belongings after an initial forensic scan as soon as possible to The Netherlands.

The investigation team of police officers and experts is working on the basis of protocols. There are searchers and salvagers. "They work in protective clothing and with gloves," said Aalbersberg. The other police officers are engaged in the plotting of grids, among other tasks.

Starting today, the investigation team will move into a new base in Soledar, almost 90 kilometers northwest of the crash site. The recovery team will stay in Soledar on a campus that the Ukrainian authorities have made available. "There's a school, a sports complex and a medical clinic that we can use."

The team is supported in Soledar by a social and medical team and will have a rest day tomorrow. "These people have done hard work today and we are proud of their perseverance and persistence. They are very much aware that they are doing important work and that responsibility weighs heavily on their shoulders".

Tomorrow, four research teams, each of 20 experts will be deployed. Sunday or Monday, the team will be at full strength with five teams.

The next few days, the team can deploy divers and use sonar. Two sniffer dogs can be deployed, and three sniffer dogs will be flown in. Depending on the circumstances, Aalbersberg expects that certainly a few weeks will be required before the tasks are completed.

'The hapless life of today's Russian soldier...'

'It is claimed that self-portraits posted on a Russian soldier’s Instagram account may “prove” the Russian army has been operating inside eastern Ukraine, raising the possibility that not only Russian technology but also Russian operators were involved in the destruction of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17....'

But let’s assume the pictures are real. They do not tell us anything most people don’t already know. It is widely taken for granted that Russian “advisers” have been inside rebel-held areas of Ukraine at some point during the conflict. That is factored into the west’s response....'

BBM
No. These selfies are not evidence. They are art. Fact or fiction, they portray the hapless life of today’s Russian soldier with a comic cynicism that brings The Good Solder Svejk or, if you want to keep this Russian, Tolstoy’s Pierre Bezukhov into the digital age.'

Funnily enough, I was just rereading that book. It's on my table right in front of me.

I don't agree with that Guardian article, actually. I think Russian, and Russian-backed Ukrainian military, have left an online footprint as big as a Yeti's, in my opinion.

And it it leads straight to the downing of MH17.

SAME SOLEMN CEREMONY FOR HUMAN REMAINS THAT WERE SALVAGED TODAY

De Telegraaf reports:
http://www.telegraaf.nl/binnenland/...een_duidelijkheid_over_nieuwe_vluchten__.html

It is not yet known when the next carriers with human remains will fly from Kharkov to Eindhoven. Dutch PM Mark Rutte has said this Friday. Earlier today, an unknown number of remains were recovered by experts at the crash site in eastern Ukraine.

When the coffins are flown to Eindhoven, they will be received in The Netherlands with the same ceremony as the earlier flights. That means that after landing, a minute of silence will be observed. Then a funeral procession will drive to the Korporaal van Oudheusdenkazerne in Hilversum. There, 207 experts from several countries are working on the identification.
