The latest in a string of incidents involving exotic animals kept by private residents in Minnesota has left a 10-year-old boy in critical condition after being mauled by a lion just outside this central Minnesota town.

Russell LaLa (search) of Royalton was attacked about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday when he and his father visited Chuck Mock (search) at Best Buy Auto. Mock is the registered owner of 11 large cats and a bear, said Morrison County Sheriff Michel Wetzel.

Mock opened the door of a cage on the Best Buy Auto property and a tiger pushed its way out to attack the boy. Wetzel said that when the owner was pulling off the tiger, a lion moved in and bit Russell.

I LOVE the heading of this topic. Very catchy...... Unfortunately kids sometimes with "questionable" parents suffer great harm.

From BF, to relatives, to addictions, to poverty, to negligence, to abuse to the pure stupidity of their parents or caregivers.

I think a parenting course and an INTELLIGENCE test should be mandatory. Hey there is pre-natal care, why not educate parents what to do with the little bundle of joy when they arrive.

:O who on earth thinks it's a brilliant idea to keep exotic animals as pets in the first place???

holy heck

Here in South Jersey I used to buy my dog food from Frank and Janet XXXXXX. They raised and trained chimps for the entertainment industry and prior to that the circus. She housed the "too old for tv" adult chimps out back of her residential suburban home, in radiant heated prison cells. The first time she took me back there...was the last time I ever went there!

It was the craziest, most dangerous situation I've ever seen. her husband...who almost died in a chimp attack previously. (His intestines were ripped from his body, a large thigh muscle from his leg, and fingers bitten off ) carried a taser and a cattle prod. He teased them relentlessly, with the cattle prod, into such a frenzy I feared for my own life. I couldn't get out of that building fast enough.

I reported what I saw to every agency imaginable. Nothing ever happened. After her husband died, she moved to Florida.

These were the same people years ago that touted a upright walking chimp as the missing link and became wildly famous back in the 70's.

The title of the thread is misleading.. the parents had nothing to do with the animal or attack and there is little information in the article to know if the father took the boy there to just see the animals or for some other reason.

ETA: I see in one article the father might have taken the boy there to see the animals, but still the parents did not own the animal. So i'll stand behind that the title is misleading to the topic.

It's sad that a lion and tiger were put down because someone decided to keep them as pets or as the article states a novelty, they are not pets or novelties..they are wild animals that are going to act like wild animals and to think any differently ( even if one has raised them since they were cubs ) is stupid. Then again I don't think people should own exotic animals to begin with.

That poor boy...........he will be respirator dependent and paralyzed for the rest of his life.

And why they would open a cage door when other people are present amazes me even more!

My goodness sake! I am glad that you reported the behavior! Those poor chimps. Talk about cruelty to animals!

Wow.. I'm Russell, the kid who was attacked. Read the whole story and you'll know exactly what happened since I wrote it.

Thank you for bringing your heartbreaking story to us.
You have survived your severe injuries with a wonderful attitude for life and forgiveness.
May God continue to bless you as you reach for the stars.

Thanks everyone! It's tough staying positive but like I said before, living in the past will only hold you back. I'll be adding to the story within the next week and slowly adding more content to the website since it's new. The site is pretty interesting

Welcome to Websleuths, Russell! Thank you for sharing your story with us. It takes a brave man to be able to recount that. I look forward to reading more of your story!
