I thought it might be best to start a new thread for info and updates on Carl Pistorius.

Interesting that on August 3 police were rather emphatically denying that drunk driving was being investigated:

Yet today - August 7 - it is stated that alcohol involvement has not been ruled out:

Carl's blood alcohol level at the time he was brought into the hospital emergency room is assuredly known. Due to potential interaction between alcohol and so many medications, his blood alcohol level would have been determined immediately. And yes, at least in the U.S., the hospital must provide this info to police who are investigating an accident. (Police investigation overrides HIPAA laws)

I was quite surprised to read, according to a family statement, that Carl is ventilator dependent. This is certainly not a good sign.

What an odd statement for a LE spokesperson, but I realize that could be attributed to language variations.

"Both Pistorius and the other driver were seriously injured. Pistorius was taken to a Pretoria hospital while the other was taken to a local hospital. We have heard stories that alcohol may have contributed to the accident. If so, that is not ruled out and will be determined by our investigation,” said Limpopo police spokesperson Hangwani Mulaudzi on Thursday.

But who do they mean? Carl Pistorius or the other driver? They don't actually say in any of the articles that I've read.

I wonder how the other guy is? We never get to hear about him, do we ...

No, not a peep about the other driver. At any rate, I do hope Carl will recover, as well as the other driver if s/he's injured. I can't imagine the toll all of these tragic events have had on the Pistorius family. Facing the possible loss of one son, brother, nephew, cousin; and a prison sentence of another at the same time...it's unimaginable. My thoughts and prayers are with the Pistorius family, and of course, the Steenkamp family, for all they have suffered.

I think there was a male name mentioned as the other driver in one article I read. It was about two days after the accident and I do not know where I read it.

I was able to find one reference to the "other driver." He was identified as a "Mr. Tshabalala." I have not been able to find out any status of his condition so far.

Yes, I saw that and the name rang a bell. There's a footballer of that name, but no idea if there's any connection.

Carl Pistorius ... was returning from a business trip late Friday when a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction swerved out in front of him. A colleague of Mr Pistorius travelling in a different vehicle saw the crash, which took place on the country's main N1 motorway, near the town of Modimolle in Limpopo province.

"He was able to tell us what happened," Arnold Pistorius, an uncle, said in a statement. "On the opposite side of the highway to which Carl and his colleague were travelling, traffic was in fact backed up and moving very slowly.”

... Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, police spokesman, said Mr Pistorius was alone in a Toyota Corolla when the accident happened.

"Mr Pistorius had two other occupants inside his car but they were not injured. Reports indicate that the other driver was alone, but this can't be confirmed. Both drivers had serious injuries... we suspect internal injuries." - Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi

Fascinating that UNCLE ARNOLD is the one telling us how and why the accident happened - not the police! wtf??? How very convenient!

How far back in traffic was this “colleague”?
Did s/he actually witness the entire crash or simply see the wreckage? Big difference.

Conflicting reports on how many occupants were in both cars. How freaking hard is it to count? One source says Carl was alone, another says he had two passengers (both uninjured)!

Perhaps the truth is that traffic was backed up and moving slowly on CARL’S side of the highway (?) and he’s the one who swerved out to pull around slow drivers? (If he drives anything like Oscar, this scenario is highly possible.)

While I’m not saying the other driver didn’t pull out in front of Carl and may very well be at fault - this entire Pistorius family automatically makes me suspicious of their every word and action.

Emergency workers say Pistorius was conscious throughout and sang happy birthday to one of the medics who treated him.

The Pistorius family have revealed that Carl suffered lacerations to his liver and heart as a result of the crash. He also went into respiratory failure following the accident.

According to his family, Pistorius has recovered and was discharged from the intensive care unit late last week.

I'm glad to hear all is well with CP, but why no news about the other driver? :waitasec:

STELLENBOSCH, South Africa (AP) — Oscar Pistorius’ brother is recovering and has been discharged from a hospital intensive care unit after suffering internal injuries in a car crash and going into respiratory failure, a spokeswoman for the Pistorius family said Tuesday.

Carl Pistorius has made “a miraculous recovery” after the head-on collision on a highway in northern South Africa on Aug. 1, spokeswoman Anneliese Burgess said in a statement.

The family released details of some of Carl’s injuries for the first time, saying he sustained lacerations to his heart and liver and went into respiratory failure. He also reportedly suffered multiple fractures. He was discharged from the ICU unit late last week, Burgess said, about two weeks after the accident.

Carl Pistorius, the older brother of double-amputee Olympian Oscar Pistorius, is expected to remain in the hospital in the South African capital, Pretoria, for around two more weeks for more surgery, Burgess said. He will then “proceed to a rehab facility to regain mobility,” she said.

South African media reported that Carl Pistorius, 29, also suffered fractures to an arm, a leg and an injury to his hip in the crash, although the family has not given details of those injuries. The head-on crash happened at night when another vehicle swerved onto Carl’s side of the highway. He was returning to Pretoria from a business trip to the northern city of Polokwane, his family said.
