Mass rescue as sudden storm hits Irish Regatta

A major disaster was narrowly avoided today when a sudden storm hit a boating event in County Down, Ireland. 87 boats were on the water, including children, and international competitors from as far away as Australia. Winds gusted at 60 miles an hour in the sudden squall.

At first it was thought around 100 people went overboard. Thankfully, it was 'only' 20 and all were brought to safety - though 10 had to be taken to hospital.

'Liam Colquhoun, watch manager at Belfast Coastguard, confirmed the search and rescue operation had been a success and was called off within three hours.

"We have now been told by our rescue units on scene that everyone has safely returned to shore and that no one is missing," he said.'
