THE mother of a baby boy who died after he was allegedly beaten, raped and burned by his stepfather has described the violent hours leading to her son’s death.

Mervyn Kenneth Douglas Bell went on trial in the Supreme Court today, pleading not guilty to murdering and sexually assaulting the baby last year.

He is accused of taking the 10-month-old child away from his mother in Broome and assaulting him over a 15-hour period before taking his body to the Fortescue River Road House on March 19 last year.

The boy’s mother was the first witness to take the stand, describing how Bell beat her naked in a Broome street. She also tearfully recalled the moment police told her the boy had died.

Family struggles with loss of toddler

The family of a 10-month-old Broome toddler who died after being found with sickening injuries at a Pilbara roadhouse have spoken of their grief at losing "the apple of our eyes".

Little Charlie Mullaley was reported missing at 1.20am last Wednesday.

Police had attended a domestic dispute at the family home in Broome the night before and the boy's injured mother Tamica Mullaley, 27, was admitted to Broome Hospital.

I hope Bell gets the full weight of a murder sentence handed down to him if (when) found guilty - this is just a horrible case.

Yet another child-raping, abusive "step father" -- I wonder how many beatings he gave the mother before this happened. Foul creature. Makes me sad we don't hang people anymore.

FOR 15 hours, Mervyn Kenneth Douglas Bell tortured a 10-month-old baby, inflicting broken bones, burns and bruises on the boy who was on the verge of learning to walk.

HIS motive? Payback for the child's mother humiliating Bell the night before when they fought at a house and he left her bashed, naked body lying on the ground.

On Friday, West Australian Supreme Court Justice John McKechnie found Bell, 27, guilty of sexually assaulting and murdering the boy.
Justice McKechnie, who presided over Bell's trial without a jury due to the graphic details of the evidence, said it was one of the most evil cases he had ever encountered.

He warned Bell he would face a life jail term when he is sentenced in December and indicated he might consider imposing an indefinite prison sentence, pending the results of psychological and psychiatric reports.

The family said the loss of the baby was an "unbearable grief" and hoped Bell would never be released from prison.


Please don't ever release this 'thing' Mervyn Kenneth Douglas Bell into the community ever again.
I hope when the sentence comes down, the file is stamped Never To Be Released.

Mervyn Kenneth Douglas Bell must serve 27 years before he can be eligible for parole after Justice John McKechnie handed down his sentence in the WA Supreme Court.

Bell was also given a three-year jail term for the sexual assault, to be served concurrently with his life sentence.

The 27-year-old can not be considered for release until 2040.
