Canada - Steve Pettibone, 39, Belleville ON, 18 Aug 2014

    Steve Pettibone

Beloved Sun Media sports editor goes missing near Belleville

    BELLEVILLE, Ont. —
Police are asking for the public’s help after a QMI Agency sports editor on his way to work in eastern Ontario vanished without a trace. Police are tracing the steps of Steve Pettibone, last seen at his Belleville residence at about 7:30 a.m. Monday. Pettibone left home for his job at the Recorder and Times newspaper in Brockville, Ont., about 160 km east, but never arrived. “His colleagues in the newsroom are very concerned for his well-being,” Recorder and Times managing editor Derek Gordanier wrote in a plea for information. “Steve has always been a conscientious and hard-working employee and we knew on Monday that something was seriously amiss when Steve failed to report to work by mid morning.”

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

"When from a long distant past nothing persists, after the people are dead, after things are broken and scattered, still alone, more persistent, more faithful, the smell and taste of things remain poised a long, long time like souls, ready to remind us, waiting, hoping for their moment amid the ruins of all the rest, and bear unfaltering in the tiny and almost impalpable drop of their essence the vast structure of recollection."

    Thanks los2188 for starting thread!
Sports are not my thing, but any chance Steve has recently written something that would anger anyone?

“His colleagues in the newsroom are very concerned for his well-being,” Recorder and Times managing editor Derek Gordanier wrote in a plea for information.

“Steve has always been a conscientious and hard-working employee and we knew on Monday that something was seriously amiss when Steve failed to report to work by mid morning.”

Pettibone worked for The Intelligencer in Belleville a few years ago.

The night before he went missing, he had texted with a fellow reporter and tweeted about the Blue Jays. On Monday morning, he said goodbye to his partner Michelle and said he was on his way to work.

“All seemed right and normal with our friend,” Gordanier said.

Pettibone is five-foot-10, 190 lbs., with brown eyes. He’s balding, has brown hair and a goatee.

Belleville police stated he was wearing a blue jacket with a hood, blue jeans and converse style shoes around the time he was last seen in Belleville Monday.

He was driving a grey 2013 Kia Rio sedan, with an Ontario licence plate BPMT 499.

Anyone with any information about the Pettibone’s whereabouts is asked to call Belleville police at 613-966-0882 or Quinte Crime Stoppers.

"This is a news story, a terrible news story we are obligated to report, while at the same time all of us want nothing more than to have Steve back, sitting at his desk, telling his usual jokes.

We now have a new, more visceral understanding of what it means to live with an absence that is the most terrible presence of all: an unanswered question, a relentless fear.

And, like every other friend or family member of every missing person we have ever written about before, we are appealing to anyone out there with information on Steve's whereabouts, or what happened, to help

Hope no one minds all these posts.
Over the years here on Ws , I have often posted news items from the QMI Agency, now they need help for one of their own.

I'm wondering if he always drove via the 401 to work or did he know an alternate back roads route?

"Police said late Tuesday his grey 2013 Kia Rio sedan, with Ontario licence plate BPMT 499, had been found in a wooded area west of Brockville.

Anyone with any information about the Pettibone's whereabouts is asked to call Belleville police at 613-966-0882 or Quinte Crime Stoppers.

“Steve is one of the kindest, gentlest, funniest people you could meet. The newsroom loves him. He always lightens the daily grind of our news-gathering day with his sharp wit, his jovial voice, his astounding retention of rock music and movie trivia, and his incredible talent for mimicry,” Gordanier said."

    Google earth map of Brockville.

Did Steve leave his car to observe something in the water?
Was his car stolen and dumped?
Medical emergency? Looking for a washroom?
    Lured?
    Hopefully a happy guy?

Wonder what his family situation is like. Seems odd that so far the only concerns seem to be coming from colleagues.

Unless he wrote for another agency this is rather unlikely. The R&T is a small local paper.

I don't believe a crime was committed and sadly I feel he will be found close to his car. This is local (geographically and personal) so I will keep my ears open.
