Garcia is a highly commended, six-year veteran of the department who has spent much of his career on patrol duty and some time on a graffiti task force, police said. His father, Ron Garcia, is a captain with the department.

Gabriel Garcia was shot once in the head and twice in the upper body on Friday, Lt. Richard Lawhead said.

During a shootout, Garcia's partner fired at least 30 rounds and wounded the gunman, Lawhead said.

The shooter, identified by police as Alex Alvarado, 38, of San Bernardino, died at a hospital.

Alvarado had convictions for assault with a deadly weapon, grand theft and driving under the influence, court records show.

When he was sentenced in January 2009 for a second DUI conviction, Alvarado was fined $130 and ordered to complete an alcohol program for repeat offenders. But court records say he never paid the fine and never submitted proof that he had completed the alcohol program.

A Southern California police officer critically wounded during a gun battle last August has finally gone home.

San Bernardino Police Officer Gabriel Garcia left a Pomona rehabilitation facility and has moved into his parents' home, San Bernardino Police Lt. Richard Lawhead said...

By December, Garcia had begun moving and speaking again. Doctors expected it would take six months to a year to fully measure his recovery. "He’s walking with help, and is working on speech and therapy but still has a long road to recovery," Lawhead said.

San Bernardino police Officer Gabe Garcia, who was shot in the head by a gang member in August of last year, attended a police awards ceremony at headquarters Tuesday morning where he received a purple heart and a police cross from the department for his injuries and heroism.

Garcia, 32, emerged from a coma paralyzed on one side and barely able to talk. But a year later, Garcia’s father Ron, himself a retired captain with the department, said he was proud to see his son having recovered enough to walk up to receive his awards at the ceremony.
