CA - Five people killed Los Angeles County shootings, March-August 2014

    http://touch.latimes.com/#section/-1.../p2p-81174598/

Los Angeles police urged residents to remain vigilant Monday morning as detectives fanned across the San Fernando Valley looking for clues behind a series of shootings that left three people dead and four others wounded.

Detectives with the LAPD’s elite Robbery-Homicide Division “have been working literally around the clock” on the case since the three shootings occurred Sunday morning, LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith said. Investigators are looking for witnesses and video evidence – anything, Smith said, to help crack the case.

“What kind of monster would do something like this – get up and start driving around and shooting people at random?” Smith said. “Until we have this entire thing wrapped up and all people that were involved in custody, we’re not going to stand down. People need to remain vigilant.”

A suspect in a series of shootings that killed three people and left four people injured within the span of an hour in the northern suburbs of Los Angeles was taken into custody following a standoff, police said.

The suspect was taken into custody Sunday by SWAT officers after holing himself up in a house for about an hour, Capt. William Hayes said.

Hays declined to say what led officers to the house or whether any evidence was found inside. Witnesses had reported seeing two men in a tan- or gold-colored SUV at two of the three crime scenes in the San Fernando Valley area.

A man considered by detectives as "a person of interest" in three San Fernando Valley killings over the weekend has been arrested in connection with a separate case involving the fatal shootings of two dogs, Los Angeles police said Monday.

LAPD Cmdr. Andrew Smith identified the man as Alexander Hernandez, 34. Hernandez was taken into custody by SWAT officers at his home in Sylmar late Sunday and was booked on an animal-cruelty charge, Smith said...

Smith said detectives now believe that the gunman involved in Sunday's killings of two women and one man in separate incidents acted alone. He said police also are trying to determine whether Sunday's killings are connected to other unsolved shootings in recent days.

3 killed, 4 injured in Los Angeles shooting spree

Watching the local newscast and they are saying the POI is being held on animal cruelty charges while they try to determine if he is connected to this mornings shootings.

    He killed two dogs yesterday.

Also looking to see if he is a suspect in the recent freeway shootings.

    What a total monster!

Los Angeles police SWAT officers took Hernandez into custody Sunday evening with a pistol-grip shotgun in his possession that they believe was used in the attacks.

Prosecutors have charged Hernandez with one count of capital murder, two counts of attempted murder and three counts of animal cruelty. He's scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday and remains held on $1 million bail.

Prosecutors didn't know if he had retained an attorney. Albanese said Hernandez was being unco-operative with police.

I can't believe the option of bail exists at all. He shouldn't have the option to be out on the streets ever again - JMO. I realize he hasn't been charged with all of the crimes related to the spree yet, but he strikes me as a huge flight risk. I pray he isn't able to make bail.

A man accused of going on a five-day shooting rampage that killed four people was charged with new counts Thursday that could bring him the death penalty.

The district attorney's office said the amended complaint charges 34-year-old Alexander Hernandez with four counts of capital murder, seven counts of attempted murder and 11 other related crimes. The new allegations bring the total number of charges against him to 22.

A man who allegedly went on a shooting spree that left four people dead in the San Fernando Valley last summer was charged today with other crimes, including the shooting death of a man on the Foothill (210) Freeway in Sylmar a year ago.

Alexander Hernandez, 34, of Sylmar, pleaded not guilty to a murder charge stemming from the killing of Sergio Sanchez, who was driving home from work when he was shot about 1 a.m. March 14, 2014, near the Roxford Street off-ramp...

Along with the latest murder count, the prosecution added three counts of attempted murder against Hernandez involving three other shootings between April 27 and June 15, including the May 14 shooting of a Chatsworth teen who was driving his girlfriend home from their high school prom. One of the bullets struck the teen’s spine, causing paralysis, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

    Thanks once again OkieGranny.

I'm floored by the NG plea.

So much damage has already been done. Now the victims and their families have to go through a trial. Unbelievable.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephen A. Marcus found sufficient evidence to require Alexander Hernandez, 36, to proceed to trial on 31 counts, including five counts of murder and 11 counts of attempted murder, according to Deputy District Attorney Michele Hanisee.

Hernandez is charged with the killings of Sergio Sanchez on March 14, 2014; Gilardo Morales on Aug. 21, 2014; and Gloria Tovar, Michael Planells and Mariana Franco on Aug. 24, 2014, along with the 11 attempted murders — the bulk of which occurred between Aug. 20 and 24, 2014.
