    Israel - Aaron Sofer, 23, Jerusalem, 22 August 2014

Israeli police said Tuesday they are searching for a young New Jersey religious student who went missing during a hike in a forest outside Jerusalem last week.
Twenty-three-year-old Aaron Sofer of Lakewood, New Jersey, has been missing since Friday when he went on a hike with a friend in the Jerusalem Forest, said police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld.

Sofer and his friend apparently became separated, and Sofer never emerged.

Israeli searchers for missing Lakewood, New Jersey yeshiva student Aaron Sofer have found some of his personal belongs near a trail, his last known location, but fears are growing that the 23-year-old youth has been kidnapped and/or murdered.

While Smith said he understands that most of the wooded area has been thoroughly searched by now, he noted that it includes deep ravines where it is possible a person could have fallen. Previous reports that searchers found items that may have belonged to Sofer are unconfirmed, Smith said.

It is unclear why Sofer and his friend became separated or why they chose to go for a hike in a wooded area in Israel, Smith said. It took hours for the friend to report Sofer missing, Smith said.

' "Please bring back our brother," said Yaakov Sofer, brother of the 23-year-old man, Aaron Sofer.'

'There have been no claims of abduction...'

' "We're looking at a pretty small piece of real estate," said Smith... "After the first day, you become concerned. This is the fourth day." '

Israeli police have not ruled out that a terrorist attack could be behind the disappearance of an American yeshiva student, as they continue their search.

If Hamas is behind this, what to make of the friend's story that he disappeared while hiking?

Couldn't he have been kidnapped while hiking? The friend got separated and someone saw an opportunity to grab Aaron?
Unless I've provided a link, most of what I say is my own opinion. Sometimes, I'm thinking out loud and may explore avenues I don't necessarily think are true, but I'm always aware I could be wrong, so I check other stuff out.

A body has been found on the outskirts of a forest in Israel not far from where a 23-year-old religious student from New Jersey vanished on a hike nearly a week ago, authorities say...

The condition of the remains wasn't immediately clear. Forensic experts were working to determine if they were Sofer.

Authorities believe they have found the body of a 23-year-old Lakewood religious studies student who went missing during a hike on Friday, Israeli media sources are reporting...

Israeli media are reporting that he appeared to have fallen off a cliff and that his death appeared to have no connection to fighting between Israelis and Palestinians.

As sad as this outcome is, I am so glad it seems to be just a death by misadventure. This is an adult who died doing something he enjoyed and not another life lost to politics and hatred. If it had been a terrorist event, I suspect a lot more lives would be lost in days to come.

Wishing for peace and comfort for Aaron's family. Also wishing for peace for Israelis and Palestinians in general.

Israeli Spokesman Micki Rosenfeld, who is on site where the body is, has confirmed it is indeed Aaron Sofer, of Lakewood. He was found in Ein Kerem, a neighborhood right next to the Jerusalem forest. He was not buried, but found lying on the ground. Rosenfeld couldn't yet say the cause of death. Forensic teams are on site.

Crud, I guess the jury is still out.
