MO - Dayne Hathman, 6, shot to death in his Fulton home, 28 Aug 2014

A 27-year-old man arrested for littering in Sedalia, Missouri, has been named as a POI in the death of a 6-year-old, central Missouri boy.

Apart from a gun being found in his car, the Callaway County Sheriff's Office haven't released any information though, about the man or the dead little boy.

I'm thinking it must have made the news if a little boy has been found dead in this area, surely?

'A Columbia man is in custody in Pettis County in relation to the murder of a six-year-old mid-Missouri boy.'

The little boy was from Fulton.

Photo link for mugshot of POI Scottie Willet. He doesn't look 27 years old, to me.

Callaway County Sheriff Dennis Crane and Lt. Clay Chism interviewed Willet in the Pettis County Jail, and Willet admitted to them he shot the 6-year-old boy multiple times with a Hi-Point .40-caliber handgun inside a residence at 7576 Primrose Lane southwest of Fulton, the statement said...

There was no indication of a motive in the probable cause statement nor was there mention of how Willet knew the boy...

The boy was found "concealed and deceased" inside the home on Primrose, the probable cause statement said. A news conference is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. at the Callaway County Sheriff’s Department.

Police say Scottie Willet, formerly of Columbia and Sedalia, admitted to shooting the boy multiple times while Willet was babysitting him. The child’s mother had left for work at about 4 p.m. and when she returned home at about 2:30 a.m., she found the boy shot multiple times and hidden in Willet’s bedroom...

Although the relationship between the Willet and the victim was initially described as uncle/nephew, police indicated Thursday afternoon in a news conference that Willet was a friend of the family.

Willet was a friend of Dayne Hathman’s family. He had been staying at the home of the boy’s mother, Ladaynea Simpson, since January, Callaway County Sheriff Dennis Crane told the media during a press conference Thursday.

There is no romantic relationship between Willet and Simpson, Crane said. Willet previously lived in Columbia and Sedalia, and Crane could not comment on if the boy sustained any prior physical abuse or if Willet suffered from mental illness...

When she arrived home, Simpson believed her child was missing. Willet was still at the residence. She called her mother, the child’s grandmother who lived next door, to inform her about what was thought to be a disappearance. The grandmother called authorities at 2:39 a.m., Crane said. When Willet learned police and emergency personnel were on their way, he fled the home and took off in the mother’s gray Pontiac vehicle, Crane said.

Deputies tell KRCG 13 Dayne Hathman suffered two gunshot wounds.

Some of the evidence is being sent to the crime lab for further investigation, although deputies would not say why.

Suspect in child's murder to face new charges

Willet appeared at the Callaway County Courthouse through a live video feed. He now faces 5 charges, first degree murder, armed criminal action, receiving stolen property, first-degree tampering, and tampering with physical evidence. Court documents indicate the charges are related to events during and after the murder of 6-year-old Dayne Hathman. Documents indicate Willet hid spent shell casings in a drawer, attempted to wash blood from the body in a bathtub, and concealed the body in a container.

A parole officer interviewed Willet at the Callaway County Jail. Court documents indicate Willet told the parole officer he would flee and not appear in court if he was bonded out of jail. Willet said, “I got places to hide”.

    June 2016:

Scottie Willet pleads guilty to first degree murder

Willet has pleaded guilty to first degree murder. State is not seeking death penalty. He is sentenced to life without parole for the first degree murder and 20 years for the armed criminal action. They will be served consecutively, meaning one sentence after another.
Family of murdered child speaks about Willet's guilty plea

"I'm very pleased that he got life in prison with no parole because the death penalty is the easy way out," said Mary Hathman, Dayne's grandmother.

"I want him to live to 99-years-old and know where he's at and why he's there," said Mary.

"For two years now, we've went through this living hell and we still don't know why he did it. What possessed him to do it? Other than that he's an evil, vicious *******. That's one of the things I want to know," said Jackie Lammers, Dayne's Great Aunt.
Scottie Willet has since filed an appeal. The next hearing for that is currently scheduled for April 4th.

    http://www.fultonsun.com/news/local/...june-5/668676/

Willet, Wilson added, is alleging his defense attorney was ineffective while representing him in the criminal case.

"Willet's motion making those allegations was made pro se, or without the benefit of counsel," Wilson also added.

According to court personnel, Willet is seeking post-conviction relief referencing two state laws, including Rule 24.035.
