MD - Martin Rogers, 54, La Vale, 21 August 2014

    http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/lo...273126461.html

The family of 54-year-old Martin Rogers is hoping they won't have to go another day without the beloved NIH scientist.

Rogers was last seen Aug. 21 around 7:30 a.m. as he left his home in Gaithersburg to go to work. As he was leaving, he told his wife he was going to a meeting, and he drove away in a blue Audi. His co-workers said he never showed up to work that morning...

Police say surveillance video captured Martin checking into a hotel in La Vale, Maryland, looking "stressed out." He's also possibly been seen on the C&O Canal over the past week.

“We know he checked in with a credit card and he was sweaty and wearing a green and tan checkered shirt and tan khaki pants at the time. He left there sometime that day and was not seen again until Sunday when he was seen on the trail in the area of Shepherdstown, West Virginia,” said Penny Oxford, Rogers’ sister-in-law.

The sighting on the C&O Canal towpath near Shepherdstown was reportedly provided through Facebook and is believed by authorities to be an actual sighting of Rogers.

Oxford and her brother Rob Conner searched parking lots in the Cumberland area Wednesday in hope of discovering the blue 2001 Audi A4 sedan that Rogers was last seen driving into the LaVale Super 8 Motel parking lot on Aug. 22. The vehicle displayed Maryland license 1FB6739.

I think I just read something about a blue Audi in a thread about two teens from NE MD--I'll try to find it--geographically they aren't too far apart but the situations do not seem like they would begin to be related.

Update: The car found in Philly was an A8--very different from the Audi that MR was driving!

I have stayed in the same hotel he checked into--you can get to some very remote areas very quickly from there.

His work involved infectious diseases. He was sweaty and distressed. Could it be he contracted some sort of illness?
My husband's friends made the news many years ago after he became delirious on a flight from Mexico to the San Francisco. He broke into the cockpit and grabbed the controls.Passengers and the co pilot had to subdue him. Turns out he had encephalitis. Even though this was a medical issue, he can never fly again.

A Montgomery County man has been missing for more than a week despite multiple reported sightings across the region, police say.

I just saw this on FB from a friend of mine, this guy is a couple of degrees of sepaation away

Looks like they've set up this FB profile (rather than a group) detailing search areas https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100006826666361 - anyone who is local to the area who might be able to help them with getting word out/setting up a group proper would be appreciated

I wonder if he has withdrawn any money or used cards after the hotel. I suppose his phone records have been searched, if he had one.

"The detective working on the case... told us that why a person leaves often helps them find out where they went," Conner said. "But when the detective went through all the normal reasons a person leaves money problems, work problems, trouble at home, a girlfriend none of that matched John"...

One of the theories authorities and volunteers are working under is that Rogers may have become infected and the infection has compromised his mental abilities. That's a situation Conner said is possible due to lab work performed by John and Kelley, and his extensive travels to foreign countries...

Kelley continues to run both the family's household and the search for her husband. "She's living in the middle of a tornado right now," Conner said. "She's a scientist, she's a thinker, she's busy trying to solve this mystery herself, coordinate all the helpers, and keep life as normal as she can for the kids.

That's an old article from September 2013, so that seems unlikely in this case.

I'm curious to know whether his meeting was at the main NIH complex or elsewhere, as La Vale is in the opposite direction he would travel to go to work. It's about a 2-3 hour drive from Gaithersburg.

Unless they noticed changes in him before that day, would he have been fine one minute and then just got totally turned around and lost? I don't know what to think about this.

He last used his credit card the day he disappeared, checking into a hotel in La Vale. The clerk noticed his behavior was strange. “He was not himself,” said Rogers’ wife, Kelley. “He looked panicked, drenched in sweat, trembling; clearly, something was wrong.”

Now, organizers are focused on stepping up their search, and they believe finding Rogers’ car is key.

“Anyone who’s watching, we need my husband home,” Kelley Rogers said. “Please, help us get him home by keeping an eye out for that car.”

There seem to be some similarities to Dr Taleka Patrick who disappeared from Kalamazoo MI back in December- and her body found in the spring in a small lake near where her car was found. In her case she had serious psych issues- but were apparently not reported ( or recognized ) in initial news reports. Is it possible he is suffering from some psychotic break as well? Feeling he is being chased etc?
