    MT - George Baumann, 56, Stevensville, 26 Aug 2014

    George Alex Baumann

Search for missing Stevensville man continues

Ravalli County Sheriff Chris Hoffman says they are looking for George Alex Baumann, 56, who reportedly left home at around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday. Hoffman says Baumann told a friend that he was going to cut fire wood in the Ambrose Creek area, east of Stevensville. Baumann was reported missing after he didn't return home. Baumann's pickup truck was found and Ravalli County Search and Rescue responded to the area. Despite a ground and air search - including a dog team - Baumann has not yet been found. Hoffman said there is a possibility that Baumann may have ridden out of the area with someone else. At this point, nothing is being ruled out.

Authorities tried to "ping" Baumann's cell phone, which means using multiple cell towers to bounce off a phone and determine its location. However, there apparently is only one cell tower in the search area.

"[If] we can only ping off one tower, that doesn't give us an exact location," said Hoffman...

On Friday, authorities had to concentrate their efforts outside of the woods as they wait for six specialized search dog teams to arrive from around Montana. An initial, wide search through the wooded area with a Jefferson County dog team was unsuccessful.

The sheriff’s department is working through a number of leads.

“There were a lot of people involved in the initial search,” Hoffman said. “There were a lot of friends and acquaintances up there. They told us a lot of things. We are trying to follow up on each and every statement they provided.”

Well I don't know about this situation, but the same thing happened with my son last week. He is a contractor and hired the friend of another worker. He worked 3 days and on Thursday, he was being told the measurements for cutting shoe mold. He would cut it and bring it inside to my son. He didn't come when my son called out and he went out and he was gone. There was an entire crew and nobody saw him leave. They looked and called and rode and went into town. They called his wife and she said he had seizures, so they went into the woods and searched until dark. She finally filed a police report that night. Saturday, he comes strolling into the house. Won't say where he was, or how he got 50 miles back home with no car.

Ravalli County Sheriff Chris Hoffman said today that the active search in the mountains east of Stevensville, for George Alex Baumann has been suspended...

Hoffman said “our search and rescue teams, and the dog teams from out of the area worked hard in the rugged, heavily timbered search area. We couldn’t have hoped for a better effort, only a better outcome.”

Ravalli County Sheriff’s investigators were continuing to follow leads regarding Baumann’s disappearance on Monday and Tuesday. Hoffman said that he was convinced that if Mr. Baumann was in the Ambrose Creek Saddle area, he would have been found, and that if investigators uncover evidence to suggest another location to look for George, teams would be sent to look.
