A 30 year veteran police officer Gregory Thompson, 53 was arrested after allegedly donning a mask and beating a woman with a baseball bat. Calls of a screaming woman at 2 AM on Aug 16 brought LE to the scene where they found Thompson in his car with 2 guns, a bat, zip ties and a mask. The woman who had run out of gas was looking for help when she was attacked in Walnut Creek, Ca. Another woman had saved her and fought with Thompson, allowing her to get away.

A motive in the case was not clear. But Thompson's family has a one-story, two-bedroom home on sale for $289,000 two blocks from where the incident occurred, records show. The home had been on the market for nine days when the incident occurred.

"This appears to be a random incident," said French, adding that the woman and Thompson did not know each other.

Very odd, has he done this before?

Another article with video. The woman's car broke down near the cop's parent's former home. Thompson had been emptying the home and getting it ready to sell. A few weeks back according to a neighbor, someone had thrown a brick through a window of that home. Could Thompson have blamed her for that? Why the mask? Why hit an unknown woman with a bat? Maybe he wanted to take her into that home for bad reasons. The victim escaped an unknown fate because someone helped her. A witness saw which car the bat wielding man entered and told LE. Neighbors said LE arrived very quickly which enabled them to catch Mr Thompson.

A Bay Area police officer has been sentenced to a year in jail after he was convicted of attacking a woman with a baseball bat...

He pleaded no contest last month to assault, vandalism and a weapons enhancement and was sentenced on Friday. The San Francisco Chronicle reports he is eligible to serve six months of the sentence under home detention and receive credit toward the other six months.

Thompson retired from the police department in September.
