Travis Murrow
Woods County resident Travis Murrow, 40, was last seen Aug. 24. His truck was found west of Canton in Dewey County.

Friends, family search rural western Oklahoma for missing father

Friends and family of a Woods County man are searching rural areas on horseback near Canton, hoping to find any trace of the father of four who went missing one week ago. The last time someone heard from Travis Murrow, 40, was Aug. 24, his ex-wife Christy Murrow said. On Thursday, his family found his truck at an impound lot; it had been abandoned and towed from an area west of Canton earlier in the week. Murrow is originally from Freedom but has been living in Alva. He's also a rodeo cowboy and proudly watched his kids ride bulls at a recent event, according to posts on his Facebook page. His brother and two friends spent Saturday searching nearby areas on horseback, said family friend Wendi Beeson. There have also been searches on foot and the Dewey County Sheriff's Office confirmed Saturday they are also looking for Murrow.

There are multiple outstanding warrants for Travis Murrow in Dewey County, according to the Dewey County Sheriff’s Office.

The warrants are for possession of controlled dangerous substance-meth, a probation violation for assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

I just saw this on the local news. They said he had warrants out for his arrest but didn't say what they are for. Thank you, OkieGranny.

Beeson says Murrow talks to all of his kids several times a day. “The fact that man has not called his kids, if that’s not the biggest red flag I’ve ever seen,” said Beeson.

Sunday, August 24th is the last time anyone heard from him. He had sent a message to a woman he was seeing, letting her know he was in the Canton area.

Several days later, Murrow’s pickup truck was found abandoned about four miles west of Canton Lake. “Pulled up in front of, not quite to the cattle guard, about 30 foot off the road, just sitting there locked up, nothing suspicious looking about it,” said Beeson.

If meth is involved (and hopefully it isn't) it's anyone's guess as to who, where, when, why.
He was originally from Freedom, but living in Alva (both are in Woods County). Truck found in Dewey County near Canton Lake, and his arrest warrants are from Dewey County. Wonder why he was in Dewey County.

ALVA, Okla. – Scott Beeson says he doesn’t know what to think about the disappearance of his best friend, Travis Murrow.

“I’m baffled. I’ve never in my life been associated with anything this bizarre, that a man just up and vanishes,” said Beeson.

Murrow is 40 years old and has 4 children.

Family offering reward in missing man case

Murrow’s brother, Trent Murrow, said family members set up a reward on Sunday but have not placed an amount on the reward.

The warrants suggest he has issues with drugs and other unpleasant things, but his family doesn't feel his disappearance has anything to do with the warrants. I am not so sure, but maybe not in the way they are talking about.

He has been arrested a few times for DUS (Driving Under Suspension) and other small crimes since the heavy charges back in 2009. He shows a lack of judgment and respect for the law, imo. This could mean he hasn't left the world of drugs behind and maybe he met with foul play during such an encounter out in the country before meeting up with the woman he was seeing. I am curious about the text he sent to her and the pings of where it came from when he sent it. I hope they are working on that angle.

Canton lake is a very rural setting and where his truck was found is very remote. Locked up and setting off to the side of the road as if he parked it then walked away. Since they didn't find him near the truck, one could assume he caught a ride out of the area. It would be logical to look at the girlfriend and others he knew there.

Suicide is another possibility and maybe they overlooked his body somewhere in that 10 miles of searching.

Did he actually send that text to the woman? (Was the woman married?) Was someone in the truck with him? Did he meet someone there? Many questions and few answers so far.

Travis Murrow
I love it when people underestimate my intelligence and my toughness. Gives me something to laugh at.....
Aug 19 · Public

His next to last post (a meme) said, "Sometimes I have to tell myself it's just not worth the jail time"

On one of his friend's FB page is a flyer which said he was seen by locals walking in another area, but doesn't say when or where. Sounds like he is a walkaway Joe.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation is assisting as area authorities continue to investigate an Alva man’s recent disappearance...

“We have helped conduct a few interviews,” OSBI Public Information Officer Jessica Brown said. She said it has not been determined if foul play is involved in his disappearance...

After he took the report, Hawley “pinged” Murrow’s cellular phone before it was “shut off.” He said it showed up at some locations in Fairview.

Trying to track Travis' movements from home to where his truck was found, this is the best I can figure from all the locations mentioned in MSM reports:

A - Alva, OK
B - Enid, OK
C - Fairview, OK
D - Canton, OK

It's 133 miles or about 2 hours and 25 minutes driving time between A and D. Canton Lake is just to the north of Canton (D), and his truck was found four miles west of the lake.

They mentioned his phone was "shut off" after taking the missing person report so I wonder when this was done? His pings put him in the Fairview area hours or days after he went missing?

There still is no sign of a missing Alva man, according to an Alva Police Department officer... The search for Murrow is ongoing, Officer Patrick Hawley said.

He said Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation “is doing more work,” like mapping Murrow’s cellphone.

Hawley, who took the initial report on Murrow’s disappearance, previously said he had “pinged” Murrow’s cellphone before it was shut off. The phone had shown up at some locations in Fairview, but when police checked those locations, there were no leads, he said.

According to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, earlier this week, Alva police requested OSBI to open a full investigation into the case. Prior to the request, OSBI agents had been assisting Alva police with interviews.

On Thursday, several OSBI agents spent the day flying in the OSBI airplane and driving roads in Blaine, Major, and Dewey counties, searching for any clues in Murrow's whereabouts.

Travis has still not been found. His family needs some answers and I pray they get them soon!

Drug deal gone bad?

I don't want to sound mean but this man obviously has struggled with addiction and has been in trouble with the law...I really don't get how his family & friends can say:
[...] Murrow talks to all of his kids several times a day. “The fact that man has not called his kids, if that’s not the biggest red flag I’ve ever seen”
(from http://kfor.com/2014/09/01/friends-family-searching-for-missing-alva-man/). Sounds like denial to me. I can't imagine he has been the most reliable person before, considering my experience with addicts.

I understand what you're saying. I know I've read he's had his probs in the past, but doesn't to have appeared to be in any current trouble and was very active in his kid's lives according to facebook posts. I don't know the family personally, but I do hope he's found for his kid's sake. I kept thinking they would check the Casino videos at Canton, since he had a large sum of cash from selling a vehicle? Just don't know how people vanish into thin air like this. So sad for his kiddos.
