FL - Michael Goodman, 41, shot to death in his Sarasota County home, 4 Aug 2014
A Sarasota woman who originally told police she shot and killed her boyfriend in self-defense earlier this month was arrested Thursday and charged with second-degree murder.
The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office said Karli Wilbanks, 25, shot 41-year-old Michael Goodman multiple times on August 4 inside the home they shared on the 1300 block of Ranchero Drive, located in the Pine Valley Ranches community East of Interstate 75.
Wilbanks told detectives that Goodman said he was going to kill her and quickly moved toward her. She said she fired warning shots and then shot him. During the investigation, interviews and forensic evidence raised questions that Wilbanks could not explain.
Detectives spoke with friends and neighbors who said while Wilbanks told them about physical abuse they never saw any marks on her and never saw Goodman get angry with her. Most friends said that Goodman wanted to take care of Wilbanks and could not fathom him hurting her. In addition, acquaintances who attended a party at the Ranchero Drive home in May reported that Wilbanks was jealous about a girl at the party and said she would kill Goodman.

From March 2015:
In the week before Goodman's death, Wilbanks went to a shooting range, took lessons in self-defense and weapons from a retired deputy and made three visits to a local center for domestic violence victims.
Those are the reasons cited in a memorandum filed Tuesday by the State Attorney's Office explaining that murder charges against Wilbanks will be dropped because prosecutors cannot prove she was not acting in self-defense.
Those same facts make Goodman's family and friends believe Wilbanks crafted a plan to kill Goodman and get away with it... “They made a mistake. She's guilty of murder and they're letting her walk,” said Goodman's brother, Jon. “The murder came out of jealous rage. They split up. She wasn't ready to let him go. That doesn't excuse murder.”
