The shootings took place around 1 p.m. on Tuesday in the area of 1 East Woodbridge Lane in Kansas City, Mo., which is just north of Blue Ridge Blvd. and east of Wornall Road, near the Blue Hills County Club. Police believe the situation began as a home invasion, but then quickly escalated when two neighbors saw the suspect and approached him.

Sources said when police arrived on the scene they initially located one person who had been shot outside a home on Woodbridge Road, and then discovered two others inside. Sources said the neighbors who had approached the suspect were shot at point-blank range. It is unclear at this time where the fourth and fifth victims were discovered but police said there were multiple crime scenes.

Late Tuesday afternoon police located a Toyota SUV believed stolen from the scene. They found it in Kansas City North where sources say the suspect dumped the vehicle and attempted to carjack and rob a teen... The description of the suspect was simply: A black male wearing a black hoodie.

Three people, two females and a male, were confirmed dead at the scene. Two victims remain hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, authorities said...

Less than 2½ hours later, officers were called to a separate incident at a Motel 6 across town, where someone had assaulted three guests. No weapon was used, and the suspect fled on foot. While searching the area, police found the Toyota Highlander only four blocks away, according to a news release from the police department.

The close proximity of the missing vehicle to the motel assault prompted authorities to release a description of the suspect, described as a black male in his late 20s or early 30s, about 6 feet 2 inches tall, and weighing about 200 pounds. He was reportedly unshaven, wearing dark pants and a black rag on his head. He was not wearing a shirt and is still at large, authorities said.

The crimes unfolded on Woodbridge Lane early Tuesday afternoon -- a cul-de-sac near 127th Street and Wornall Road. The area is also near the Blue Hills Country Club.

Kansas City police said two women and a man were killed about 1 p.m. Police were called to the neighborhood on a reported shooting. At least two other people were wounded. Police said they were in critical condition. All five victims were adults and they were found at three different homes.

KMBC's Haley Harrison reported that a source close to the investigation told her that the incident started with an attempted car theft. She said she was told the man unsuccessfully tried to steal a Jaguar. He stole a 2002 Toyota Highlander with Missouri license plate KC5-A4X instead. Harrison said she has learned that the man may have started to shoot witnesses as they came outside and started to call 911.

Ugh 1pm. You always think this kind of thing happens at night, yet there it was in broad daylight.

The murder victims are Susan Choucran, an unidentified 88-year-old woman and her 68-year-old son. Two others, a married couple, remain in the hospital in critical condition after they were found severely beaten.

Police sources and neighbors tell FOX 4 that the three victims killed in the South Kansas City Woodbridge neighborhood were apparently coming to the aid of neighbors. Neighbors say Choucran, along with the mother and son victims, reportedly noticed a man attempting to steal their neighbors’ antique Jaguar from their home at One Woodbridge Lane. They say the suspect hot-wired the Jaguar but was having trouble driving it away. Seeing something wrong, the three approached the scene and were shot at point-blank range, killing them instantly.

Brandon B. Howell, 34, the suspect in the triple homicide, was also charged with assaulting three other people hours later in a nearby motel.

“Any type of incident such as this is weird, this is not normal, this not what happens in our society. This is a random act violence that we are so thankful that we have the suspect in custody,” said Sgt. Kari Thompson...

The officer said that Howell has been "positively identified" as the suspect in both attacks.

According to court documents, police went to 1 E. Woodbridge Lane at 12:50 p.m. Tuesday after a woman had called 911. She asked for help and said, “Shotgun.”

Officers arrived and found Choucroun lying in the driveway of 3 E. Woodbridge Lane, which adjoins 1 E. Woodbridge. She had suffered a fatal gunshot wound. Officers went inside 1 E. Woodbridge and found a man and woman in the basement. They had been severely beaten. Police began a house-to-house search and found the Hursts shot to death in the front yard of 7 E. Woodbridge.

Between 3 and 4 p.m. Tuesday, police were called to a Motel 6 at 8230 NW Prairie View Road, where they found three victims, one with several cuts on his head. The victims told police that a man had followed them to their room and asked for a cigarette. After assaulting two of the victims, the man fled on foot.

Howell had been tried and acquitted in the slayings of Nick Travis and Tabitha Brewer 16 years ago. Brewer's body has never been found, but police said she is presumed dead.

When a jury acquitted Howell of those crimes, he was already serving a 12-year prison sentence for a kidnapping and assault at a Gardner apartment complex. Prosecutors referred to it as a "drug ripoff" in 1999 when Howell was 19.

Those court documents say, "the last known act of the defendants at the apartment was to sever the head of the resident's pet cat."

It's the detail the prosecutor on that case remembered most clearly. "Which is kind of a weird, scary thing, and he freaked those girls out," former Johnson County District Attorney Paul Morrison said.

Brandon Howell stood before Associate Judge Mary Weir on Thursday wearing a blue jail outfit and handcuffed to another inmate as she read the three first-degree murder charges and several other counts related to the shootings.

Prosecutors say Howell used a shotgun to kill 88-year-old Alice Hurst, her son, 63-year-old Darrel Hurst, and 69-year-old Susan Choucroun shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday in a middle-class cul-de-sac occupied primarily by older residents.

This whole thread has made my head spin. The perp seems to have been born without a soul. How do people like this get away with what they do, only to return to the streets and kill senior citizens??!! Heartless...no soul...I'm just flabbergasted.

He was a stone mason who is a military veteran and avid Kansas City Chiefs and Royals fan. She was an entrepreneur and has belonged to the Red Hat Society, a group of older ladies dedicated to fun and freedom.

But on Friday, George and Ann Taylor, both in their 80s, were on life support and “fighting for their lives,” said a niece who acted as a family spokeswoman at an afternoon news conference in front of the couple’s south Kansas City home.

On Tuesday, the Taylors were found brutally beaten in their tidy house on Woodbridge Lane. They are believed to be the first victims in a rampage of violence that escalated to become a triple homicide...

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — George and Ann Taylor have passed away after being taken off life support Thursday, Sept. 9.

The couple are among five people, who prosecutors say, crossed paths with Brandon Howell, 34, on Tuesday, Sept. 2 in the area of One Woodbridge Lane in South Kansas City. Police and prosecutors say Howell shot and killed Lorene Hurst, 88, her son, Darrel Hurst, 63 and neighbor Susan Choucroun, 69, when they approached him as he stole the Taylors’ SUV. Police said prior to the shootings, Howell brutally beat the Taylors in their home.

An unhinged 34-year-old ex-con faces five homicide charges following the death of two victims Tuesday, a week after the man went on a shooting and beating rampage in Kansas City, Mo., police say.

Brandon B. Howell could face the death penalty after he was arrested Sept. 2 when cops found him walking along a highway shoulder with a shotgun shoved into his waistband and the car keys from a vehicle stolen after a murder in his pocket, police said.

Police suspect Howell went on a shocking bender of violence...

Jackson County prosecutors said Thursday they expect a man accused in multiple south Kansas City murders to be arraigned Nov. 24.

At a hearing before Associate Circuit Judge Mary F. Weir, prosecutors did not say when grand jurors would be asked to indict Brandon Howell, who currently is facing 12 felony counts in the Sept. 2 shooting deaths on a quiet street.
