Doesn't sound good at all. I'm wondering if it was a surfing accident and he never made it back to his room. Very sad for his family, not knowing. :(

THE distressed wife of missing Australian surfer Peter Maynard has told of her agony after finding out her husband had mysteriously vanished while on a solo surfing adventure in Bali.

The disappearance of father-of-three Peter Maynard, 45, from Noosa on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast, has baffled local police.

Mr Maynard was due to check out of his Bali hotel last Thursday but when hotel staff searched for him they found an unoccupied room with almost all of his personal possessions – including his phone, wallet and two surfboards – abandoned and untouched.

A Queensland man has been reported missing in Bali after he failed to return to his hotel room without checking out or collecting any of his belongings.

Noosa man Peter Maynard was reported missing by the hotel Nusa Indah Bungalow last week, after he failed to check out on August 28 after a five-night stay.

Police said they found a significant number of Mr Maynard’s belongings in his hotel room including his surfboard, camera, iPad and passport.

He was last seen by hotel staff at breakfast on August 26, with local police saying they had no clues as to where the Australian man may have gone.

“If he had a marine accident, someone around the beach should know. If he went surfing, he would have bought his surf board. If he went diving, he must rent the diving tools in several dive operators here in Lembongan,” police chief Nyoman Suarsika told News Corp.
 
A report today says that a lone surfer was seen surfing 10 foot waves around the time that Peter was thought to have gone missing .....

Mr Capel told News Corporation that one of the surfers paddled away from the main group, to No Man’s Land, where they saw a big set of waves coming in.

He said the wave was about 10 feet and that he saw the surfer catch a wave and then disappear with the foam. Mr Capel didn’t see him again.

“It was a big set coming and we could see from far away he managed to catch one wave and after the big set was going, he went with the foam. Everybody thought he was gone back to the shore,” he said.

Locals have said the swell last week, around the time Mr Maynard disappeared, was massive.

Staff at the hotel had even asked Maynard if he needed a boat to take him out to the surf breaks but he had told them he would paddle out himself.

But his wife has revealed that her husband was travelling with three surfboards. One is missing.

Police chief Nyoman Suarsika said after talking to the family that Mr Maynard had come to Bali from his home in Noosa, Queensland, with three surfboards and two sets of clothing, but that only two boards and one wetsuit were found in his abandoned room at the Nusa Indah bungalows.

"The last phone call he made was on August 22, calling to his wife in Australia to say he'd arrived in Bali and would stay in Lembongan," Mr Nyoman said.

However, Mr Nyoman asked why, if it was a surfing accident, the board had not been found.

"We would have found it. The weather from August 23 to 27 was quiet, there were no strong winds or big waves. The strong winds happened after August 28," he said.

Mrs Maynard was able to confirm for police that one of his surfboards and a rash vest was missing.

Mr Maynard’s brother, John .... revealed that his brother had not been seen since the morning of August 27 when he went surfing.
“What we do know is that Peter had breakfast at his hotel that morning and then went surfing at either Shipwrecks, Lacerations or Playgrounds surfing break. He was wearing a bright blue surf vest and dark-coloured boardshorts and his surfboard is a white Hammo brand”

Mr Maynard said the family understood that the conditions that day were “relatively benign” although other surfers spoken to by News Corporation have said the swell was big at that time.

Circumstances:
Peter Maynard was staying alone at a Hotel on Nusa Lembongan Island, Bali.
He had breakfast at his accommodation on August 27, then went for a surf at one of the local breaks known as Shipwrecks, Lacerations or Playgrounds.
The ocean conditions on that day were relatively benign.

The 45-year-old was due to check out of his bungalow accommodation on August 28.
When he didn't, staff went to his room and found all of his personal effects still there and no sign of a break-in.
Hotel staff have reported the missing man looked relaxed and well when they last saw him.
His family, authorities, Rescue Services and concerned expats and surfers are searching for him.

Nusa Penida police chief Nyoman Suarsika said he believed if Mr Maynard went missing in the surf, his board would have already been found.
"We are still searching, but there's no sign at all yet.
"If it's true he had another board and went surfing, then for sure by now the board would have been found floating."

Indonesian police say officers inspected her husband’s room on Wednesday and found his clothes, surfing gear, passport and wallet but no indication of a break in.

“We’re still searching, asking every other hotel, diving operators, but his name is not listed anywhere,” Nusa Pendida police chief Nyoman Suarsika said on Thursday. “A search was also conducted by sea and by spreading information among people, but so far, no answers.”

The owner of the Nusa Indah Bungalow, where Mr Maynard was staying, has told the ABC staff quickly began searching for the Australian after finding his things.

ANOTHER Australian has died in the surf in Bali, as the search continues for missing Queenslander Peter Maynard on the nearby island of Nusa Lembongan.

Police say friends of the latest victim - Geoffrey Robert Moase, a surfboard shaper from Tallebudgera Valley on the Gold Coast - found the 54-year-old floating in the surf in Lombok yesterday morning.

His death comes after 27-year-old Australian Peter Luke died after being hit by a huge wave on a remote beach on the island of Sumbawa last month.

"The family of Peter Maynard told police there had been no marital problems and that he had gone holidaying on Nusa Lembongan alone only because his wife, Kylie, could not get leave.

In a statement to reporters on Friday, John Maynard, the brother of the missing man, said Peter had not been seen since the morning of the 27th of August, when he had breakfast and then went surfing."

THE wife of missing Australian man Peter Maynard has confirmed a chunk of surfboard found off Bali is his.

MR Maynard's wife Kylie on Sunday identified the top section of a white Hammo brand board, found by a local last week, as her husband's.

A local man found the surfboard section at a spot called Shipwrecks on August 28, but only on Saturday heard a man was missing and took it to police.

This is the Shipwrecks surf spot. There is a reef to the far right side. The article says that it is a popular spot, many people use it. I wonder if anyone will come forward now saying they saw a lone surfer there that day. It is not No Man's Land, where the first reports said surfers saw a lone surfer.

The officer said police had not given up hope of finding Mr Maynard alive.

"We continue the search," he said on Sunday morning.
"Who knows, we might find the victim around the area.
"Certainly we hope he has survived."

Nusa Penida police chief Nyoman Suarsika says the focus of the search on Sunday has moved to the area where the surfboard section was found.

The police hunt extended over land and sea, he said.

That's good news - that the search continues for Peter Maynard.
I thought when they found a piece of the board that they may think that Peter would not be found - but its encouraging to hear that they will keep looking for him.
Hoping for that extraordinary outcome - that they find him.
Prayers of strength for his family.
 
Police say surfing in the area is much safer than diving, and they are baffled by the disappearance of the 45-year-old, who has no known medical conditions and was surfing in relatively calm conditions.

“The coral rock in Lembongan actually makes it not risky for surfing,” Wirajaya said.

“For diving, yes, that’s risky because the current is quite strong.

“In the past five years, there’s never been a surfing fatality (there).”

A local man handed in the broken top section of the Queenslander’s Hammo surfboard on Saturday, seemingly confirming the family’s fears he went missing in the water.

Detective Nyoman Wirajaya handed over the piece to the family on Monday, but said police might need it back if the disappearance became a criminal matter.
