The mother-of-five who was stabbed to death as she tended her horses in a quiet, picturesque village has been identified as 47-year-old Penelope Davies.
Hampshire Police has launched a murder inquiry following the death of the newly-wed, who is also known as Pennie and lives in the village of Beaulieu.
The supermarket worker, from the nearby village of Blackfield, was looking after her horses before she died and was found by her husband Pete at around 4.40pm on Tuesday.

He was reportedly seen sobbing at the scene and police say he's deeply traumatised. Mrs Davies was stabbed multiple times and police are appealing for anyone who saw anything suspicious. A neighbour reported seeing a white transit van in the area at around 3pm, and an open-topped tourist bus is also thought to have passed close by. Although rural, the route is a popular shortcut for tourists and locals.

Pennie's family have issued a statement:

'We are devastated by the death of our beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister and friend.
'Pennie was a remarkable person. She was a devoted mother of five children who worked hard to ensure that they had everything they needed. She cared for and supported them in everything they did.
'In May she married her love, Pete, at a joyful occasion surrounded by her loved ones. Pennie was the kind of woman who once she became your friend she was a friend for life.
'We are overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and grief that her death has caused.
'She was particularly close to her mother who is devastated by her death and who joins the whole family in appealing to everyone for help in finding the perpetrator of this crime.'

Pennie tended her horses everyday, but the times changed according to her shift pattern. So I'm thinking this was a really, really unlucky chance encounter, or someone who knew her so well, they even knew her shifts at work.

I wonder how big the store is where she worked? If they have their supplies delivered in trucks, or in smaller vehicles?

Pennie was a newlywed of just 4 months. :(

Poor woman. I hope they make an arrest soon.

Arrests!
'Three people have been arrested in connection with the murder of a mother-of-five in the New Forest.
Police arrested one person on suspicion of the murder of Penelope Davis, who was found with multiple stab wounds by her husband Pete on Tuesday.
A second person was arrested for perverting the course of justice, and a third for assisting an offender.
All three suspects remain in police custody and Mrs Davis's family has been informed.'

ETA: I see the spelling of Pennie's name in articles in has now being amended to Davis. First reports did have it with an e.

Hard to even guess at a motive unless it was maybe an ex-husband, father of her 5 kids.

Was it some kind of 'thrill' killing?

I was thinking maybe it had something to do with the fact that Pennie had only recently started renting that field. Maybe there was some kind of criminal activity going on there and she witnessed something?

Justin Robertson, 36, of no fixed abode, charged with murder.

I think he may be the same JR as in this story from a couple of years ago:

In which case he's a career criminal/burglar, which lends weight to my theory that poor Pennie was in the wrong place at the wrong time and saw something suspicious.

And last year, accused of threatening behaviour on the A326 bypass near Hythe:

A spokesman for Hampshire police said: "Detectives investigating the murder of Pennie Davis in the New Forest have arrested a man on suspicion of murder. The 36-year-old man was arrested in Southampton at 7.50pm and remains in police custody. Pennie's family has been informed."

"Pennie had recently starting renting out the field but not many people were aware of that. One of our lines of enquiry therefore is the possibility she was followed from Blackfield Sainsbury's, where she'd been working that morning, to the paddock by Leygreen farm. I'd ask anyone with information, no matter how small or insignificant you think it may be, to contact us."
