An Ohio man was charged with aggravated murder Thursday in the slayings of four men who were found beaten in separate homes earlier this week.

Donald Hoffman had been in custody since Tuesday. The charges against the 41-year-old were announced during what had been a scheduled hearing on an alleged probation violation...

The bodies of 55-year-old Billy Jack Chatman and 67-year-old Freelin Hensley were discovered Monday in this town of 12,000 residents about 65 miles north of Columbus. Then on Tuesday, the bodies of 65-year-old Darrell Lewis and 65-year-old Gerald Lee Smith were found. Bucyrus police Chief Dave Koepke noted at least one gruesome commonality: "All the victims suffered." Koepke said each man had trauma above the shoulders, but he wouldn't give specifics.

Donald W. Hoffman, 41, remains in the Crawford County Justice Center on $10 million bond after an initial appearance before Judge Sean Leuthold this morning.

He was charged with four counts of aggravated murder, all first-degree felonies. Bond was set at $2.5 million on each count...

Hoffman will be bound over to the grand jury next week. He faces, if convicted, life imprisonment or the death penalty.

Brenda Lauthers, a Bucyrus resident whose brother was among the slain men, said that she found a frying pan in a bathroom sink near his body and that the family of another victim told her that man apparently was hit with a hammer. Police refused to discuss those kinds of details, citing the ongoing investigation.

Crawford County Sheriff Scott Kent, whose office is assisting local police, said Wednesday that Hoffman gave some information as to why the killings occurred, but authorities weren't releasing the details.

A man was indicted Monday on aggravated murder, aggravated robbery and other charges in the deaths of four men found at their residences in the small city of Bucyrus over a two-day period.

In each slaying, a grand jury indicted Donald Hoffman on two counts of aggravated murder and single counts of aggravated robbery, kidnapping and felonious assault, according to a statement from the Crawford County prosecutor's office. The 21 counts also included a single charge of abuse of a corpse...

The aggravated murder charges come with specifications for a potential death penalty.

Poor girl...

Bucyrus Woman Says Cops Dumped Father's Ashes After Claiming They Tested Positive For Drugs (WBNS-10, Columbus, OH)

Sarah says the officer asked if she had anything on her and says she told him the necklace was in her pocket and that her dad's remains were inside the attachment. "I agreed to let him open it, and he was like 'This don't look like ashes so we are going to the station,'" said Lewis.

Sarah says when she went to the station, the officer told her a small sample of the contents tested positive for narcotics. She says 20 minutes later, they gave her back her necklace - but all of the ashes were gone.

OkieGranny's link above shows that they verified that her father's ashes were not, in fact, drugs.

The suspect in the slayings of four men at their homes in the small, north-central Ohio city of Bucyrus (byoo-SY'-rus) is due in court to change his plea after reaching a deal with prosecutors.

The hearing comes days before Donald Hoffman's potential death penalty case was scheduled for trial in Crawford County. The 41-year-old Hoffman initially pleaded not guilty on 21 counts.

The county prosecutor tells the Bucyrus Telegraph-Forum the plea agreement calls for Hoffman to plead guilty to aggravated murder charges and face four consecutive life sentences in exchange for the remaining charges being dropped.

A prosecutor says an Ohio man fatally beat or strangled four others at their homes while on a cocaine binge, then confessed to police after recognizing one victim's relatives in a newspaper photo.

Donald Hoffman pleaded guilty to aggravated murder Wednesday in a deal with prosecutors. He was sentenced to life in prison for the slayings last fall in Bucyrus.

Crawford County Prosecutor Matthew Crall says the 41-year-old Hoffman apparently was high and looking to steal money for drugs when he killed the men. Crall says Hoffman used his own shoestrings in one case and stomped on another man's throat.
